Can Kyle Lohse continue his excellent pitching since joining the good guys? I’m hopeful.
Will the Reds respond to last night’s dramatic victory with another big win over Houston? I’m hopeful.
Will the Reds rough up a rookie Astros pitcher named Jason Hirsh, who hasn’t pitched very well in his two career starts? I’m hopeful.
Keep those fingers crossed and discuss the game here. A win tonight would mean a series victory, which is a big deal at this point in the season.

according to http://www.foxsports.com has Lohse’s WHIP against the astros ans infinite
*is infinite
Here’s to hoping the Reds can milk this rook for some early runs!
I’ve seen Hirsch pitch before; he’s similiar to Harang in style and build and composure except his fastball is a couple of MPH slower
Gapper, what are you doing on the Nation right now… shouldn’t you be finding the reader of the game or the Montgomery Inn fan of the game right about now??
Lohse has been a stud for us so far, hopefully as Chad says, that will continue.
this 1-2 combo of freel and hatty has stunk. get me dunn back in the 2 hole. grif walks, wow!
That’s ten pitches in a row now that Hirsh has missed the strikezone with.
Dunn’s got a big strikezone.
‘ol daffy face dunn strikin out.
OK, so there’s two left on base. Let’s not go through a repeat of last night.
george grand said “well there’s the daffy face”. He comes up with the dumbest shit.
i think i must have blocked out the daffy face crap. my god! what is that even supposed to mean?
King!
I like it when AL pitchers can do something at the plate. Single for Lohse to follow the Phillips solo HR.
Anyone noticed that Freel has his wright wrist taped up.
right wrist
HATTE!!!
Wow! Hatteberg to dead-center. 3-run jobber after Lohse and Freel improbably both got hits. 4-0 Reds, just like that.
that is now 6 HOMERS allowed by Hirsh in 11 IP.
Nice 2-out rally, so far. Let’s hope Lohse keeps ‘em in the yard.
Lohse has to be happy with finally getting a lead.
Yeah I could tell that Hirsch was going to get crushed, when the little guy sent it to the wall to lead off the game. These guys are getting it together! Things seem to be clicking right now.
Did everyone see Castro get some quality camera time when he hurried to his seat next to Hatteberg after that 3-run shot! I think for some reason his after homer presence is working, we’ve been hitting alot latley, well all year for that matter!
Swinging the bats well against this rookie, I’m loving what I’m seeing tonight. This could help Lohse keep up what he’s doing.
Rich Aurilia, looking good in the neighborhood(play)
Sweet – defense supporting Lohse. Doubleplay ends the threat before Berkman can come up.
4-6-3 DP to get Lohse out of the most trouble he’s seen tonight. Lohse is looking good so far.
The giggling guest PA announcer (9-year-old Caitlin) introduced “Now batting, number 44, Adam Git ‘Er Dunn!” He promptly singles.
`One heck of a line drive for our starting SS, that almost went straight out of GABP.
what’s Dunn still doing at 2nd?
Another hard-hit ball. Keep ‘em coming.
Click.. Thats beautiful. David Ross knocks in another one. With no outs gotta keep this going.
Dunn probably held up to see if it could be caught, and then couldn’t get to third because the ball was hit to left and was quickly played back to the infield.
It matters not after the RBI double by Ross. 5-0, nobody out.
Everybody get One!
Single on an 0-2 pitch. 6-0. They might let him pitch to Lohse, but that’s got to be about it for Hirsh.
Not a good night to be an Astro fan. What a circus.
Garner still sitting on his brains.
Phillips reportedly safe “by a mile” at third base.
Yikes. What happened there? A bunt RBI single for Lohse.
Or, Phillips never got to the bag. See what I get for listening to Steve Stewart.
ross currently has the highest OPS of any catcher with at least 175 PA. not bad.
That was a good call on Phillips at 3rd, he touched Huff’s foot instead of the base.
In the immortal words of Joe Schultz, “That’s poundin’ the old Budweiser!”
I say his foot counts at third… Good call, but that sucks… we didn’t need an out, this is fun!
Ha! Excellent Joe Schultz reference!
they are really letting hirsh rot out there. i was just talking the other day about how managers don’t seem to do that anymore. i wonder if hirsh stays out there until he gets 120 pitches in to save the bullpen as much as possible.
man, walking jr, to get to ede. big mistake pal.
With that free base Jr takes…
Just thought you’d want to know…
The only NL team with a better OBP than the Reds is the LA Dodgers.
Down 6-0, the Astros issue an intentional walk to load the bases for the cleanup hitter. And finally Hirsh is relieved.
update from Shea–Cards 3 Mets 1 top 5th; 3run shot by pujols; solo shot by delgado.
or nevermind.
update freom Shea: Pujols 7 Mets 1 he just hit a granny looks like we’re staying 2 back.
EdE! Let’s save some for tomorrow afternoon!
Yeah, that was pretty easy to see what a weird move that IBB was. Edwin singles and drives in a couple more, 9-0.
i heard some chodes on espn radio today say that the reds didn’t have a good offense anymore. we may have taken a step back with no wily mo and no kearns, but this club can still beat the ball pretty good.
Cardinals 7 Mets 1 on Pujols slam…
My goodness.
good lord, this is getting brutal.
Going into tonight, Griffey had the *lowest* OPS of any of the starters (at .796) Not bad…
Adam Dunn gets in on it. 10 earned runs charged to Hirsh. 12-0 on a LONG homer.
wow.
Steve: “Man, is that Gone”
He must’ve got a hold of that one.
Ol Git-er-Dunn just nearly put #38 in the river.. This is a new pitcher for the Astros right… they are finally getting things together
just turned the game on… very good to see so far
Ryan Freel was the only Reds batter who did not get on base in that inning. Wow.
Chad, don’t we have some software that’s supposed to filter out the Larry the Cable Guy references?
We need more games where every batter has scored by the end of the third inning.
I’m searching the net trying to find some now.
Can we count Dunn’s homer towards tomorrow’s game?
I’d say that Kyle Lohse is probably going to get his first win as a Red tonight. Going out on a limb there, but we’ll see.
Am I reading the scoreboard correctly
12-0!
speaking of grand slams; mr slammy of august himself beltran is up for the mets with———the bases juiced.
Some very interesting Reds notes I just saw:
So that’s a game again?!
what a battle Pujols 7 Delgado 5..WOW!
Is Lohse trying to be too fine, or just pitching around Burke to get to the worst hitter in the league (yes, worse than LaRue).
This is obscene.
Marty is crying “uncle.”
So, what are the odds of Griffey coming out for the fifth?
HR Ross, #16 of the year leading off the fourth. 13-0.
Looks like the Cards got ahold of the Mets as they are struggling… Yes they had 4 wins in a row, but previous to that mostly losses.
The team that concerns me as serious, are the LA Dodgers, with the aquisition of Maddox they really solidify their rotation, offensively and defensively they rank well in just about every category.
Wow another HR. This one by Ross. Thats 16 in the last 8 days/ 8 games
Maybe by the end of this game this team will eliminate the run differential for the season
Let’s have some trivia fun with this big lead—Delgado’s grand slam was his 400th career homer now the question–WHO IS THE ONLY OTHER PLAYER TO HIT HIS 400TH CAREER HR AS A MEMNER OF THE METS?
Lohse is 3-3!
Geez. Lohse is 3-3! Who’s he think he is, Bronson Arroyo?
yeah it’s time to get grif out, maybe put castro and clayton in to improve D, and get this one in the books.
by the way, who does kyle lohse think he is? 3 for 3!? this guy is an animal.
Lohse 3-3. Hoa about that. Maybe he’s always been an NL Pitcher.
I would actually like to see Freel come out now. Get him some time off, and let Hopper play – I like him better than Hollandsworth. Really, there’s no way the Astros are going to score 13 times.
Is that 2 Grand Salami’s in the StL/Mets game? How often does that happen? And do both Pujols and Delgado have 2 HR each. Thats gotta be really unique.
Well lets hoe the Mets show the fight they’ve shown all year long. We need the Cards to lose some.
So are we really going to concede tomorrow’s game by pitching Michalak against Oswalt?
I’d sure like a fighting chance at a sweep.
Later,
Tom
Scrubs are in.
Marty had to sit there in silence through all the action.
LVW – Piazza? Wait, no, I guess he didn’t hit his 400th until earlier this year. That’s a tough one.
I agree, Tom. Michilak has no business being up here. His relief outing in Philly should’ve been a nice capper to his career. Now they’re going to keep running him out there until he’s totally smooshed.
And Freel outta be in the hot tub, too.
Wonder if Lohse is tired from all the baserunning.
Nice roster moves by Narron; looks like he’s reading the blog tonight.
Hi Jerry!
Is it Kingman?
here’s a hint–this guy is also the only player to hit his 300th and 500th career HRs with the same team BUT not his 400th.
Nope.
Daryl Strawberry or Mike Piazza to guess at that ??? I really have no clue
It looks to me like Duke Snider hit his 400th as a Met.
that x’s out Strawberry.
The Duke.
Reliever bats, and Berkman goes out. Is that a white flag I see?
But Snider didn’t hit 500.
Castellini is announcing another 1/2 price series when the Padres come to town.
Castellini is in the booth right now, saying that there will be a ticket promotion for the Padres series similar to the one against the Cards.
QUIT STEALING MY THOUGHTS
Anyone planning to catch one of the games in LA or SD next week?
i’d really like to see belisle start, as i say on here every other day, but i’ll admit that after a layoff, he might not be ready to roll. I’d have more faith in ryan franklin than a guy who’s career best day got him compared to terry mullholand.
LVW, I don’t see any Mets (other than Mays) who hit 500 HR.
How about Eddie Murray?
Later,
Tom
it looks like the swing at anything close order has gone into effect.
Whats the most runs scored by any team this season?
I like how Tom signs his posts.
Love,
Gapper
So whats the answer LVW??? Duke Snider??
duke snider and eddie murray…………btw i heard that homer bailey will be shut down once his minor league season is over; anyone else heard this.
… for both teams.
NO!
Mets threatening…
is there a difference between being “shut down” and just having the season end? i know kriv has said that he doesn’t expect to call him up if that’s what you’re askign LVW
The only thing I’ve heard is that due to high nomber of innings played he will not be called up this year… He’ll be in Florida next spring, I’d like to think.
Mets score on groundout, 7-6 in 6th, 2 outs, tying run on 3rd.
LoDuca grounds out against Wankright to end the Mets’ threat.
Hey everybody I just noticed that we get to see the Hip-hibbity-Hopper tonight
When the rosters are expanded I’d like tosee both Denorfia and Hopper brought up, Majewski(a second chance), Belisle, Ramirez or Standridge
Excelsior!
D-Backs trade Shawn Green to the Mets just in time for the Cardinals series. Mets haven’t looked too strong lately, hopefully this will help them do us a favour.
Why is it that George Grande always realizes stuff after everybody else?
It was pretty obvious Ryan Freel made the catch in that near collision with Hollandsworth but Grande was confused for about 10 seconds.
Lohse has looked great, only giving up three hits and 3 walks, getting 4 K’s and most importantly on track for a complete game shutout with only 85 pitches thrown so far. Settle for the shutout.
kyle lohse for president. the man’s ERA for the reds down to 1.71.
Unbelievable pitching performance so far.
And almost had his 4th hit on the night. Wow! Is this who we’ve been looking for. His heater is smokin, little action on it too!
Steve Stewart was confused about the catch too.
“…and Ryan Freel makes the catch and goes into the wall?” “You tell me,” I said to myself.
And we lead by a couple of touchdowns
is this the houston astro’s or the bad news bears they hosted in BnB2 all grown up?
Just added Lohse to my fantasy teams.
Weak 4th and 5th starters can’t hurt us in the postseason, and our postseason rotation of Harangutan, Arroyo, and hopefully Lohse looks pretty good.
Here’s a question: since Narron has shown he manages with his heart rather than his head when it comes to playing veterans, will he use Milton as a starter even if Lohse is pitching so much better?
One thing’s for sure: after being relegated to the bullpen for Boston’s postseason runs, Arroyo deserves to start a postseason game.
interesting question do you start Hollandsworth tomorrow, he’s 5-16 vs Oswalt and sit griffey(4-25 6 Ks vs Oswalt) and play Freel(5-14 with a HR vs Oswalt) in center?
Marty and Steve are bored and have been discussing movie trivia questions for the last couple of minutes. I forgot I was listening to a game until they just off-handedly remarked that Taveras singled, and went back to their movie discussion.
Hold on now … Just so you know Gapper Here’s how the current rotation works..
Harang
Arroyo
Milton
Lohse
Michalak (needs to be replaced by Franklin, or Ramirez)
Good idea: get Belisle into this game to get him sharpened and check on how effective he is going to be.
Lohse isn’t exactly fresh off the turnip truck. If he’s clearly a better option in the potential post-season rotation, there’s no doubt he’ll be in there.
Good point on Arroyo – and then this spring he was so expendable to the team he loved, that it was decided they didn’t even need him on the team at all.
LVW – wouldn’t doubt it.. Day game following a night game before travelling.
Nevermind.. it’s a night game, Narron will probably play Jr
Yes, but on recent results, Lohse should be starting the 3rd playoff game. For instance, after being staked to a huge lead, Lohse hasn’t let them back into the game, whereas Milton let the PIRATES tie the game in a few innings the other day.
For the postseason you drop the fifth man if needed.
update from Shea: NY has tying run on 2nd 1 out 8th inning with Looper coming in(to a partial chorus of boos)
Postseason, I think veteran status applies, but I agree with your point, lets see how Lohse does between now and then, if he proves to be consisitent. There’s that chance.
Then again Krivsky may go and pick someone else up.
Lets go Mets
Michael “Bugeyes” Tucker now on 3rd, 2 outs
…with the dinosaur Francosaurus Rex batting.
Why won’t the MLB site let you timeframe some of the splits. Like RISP stats since allstar, or Reliever ERA since allstar. Man its irritating
Mets acquird Shawn Green tonite(pending league approval)
If you want to break it at the all-star game, mlb.com will show you that under “splits” for each player or team.
I posted about Green earlier – hopefully he’ll be able to have an impact in this series vs Cards. Lastings Milledge just isn’t ready yet, so Endy Chavez will probably move over to left with Green playing right.
Here’s your Belisle. Let’s see what he’s got.. Thats 1 K
hey TN, try cbs.sportsline.com instead.
Gold Glove, Charlie Hustle Award, Man of the hour, relentless, Superman’s little brother, The Nati loves you Ryan Freel! MVP
thank you, LVW
It’s a win! Largest margin of the year. Nice to try and make up the ol’ run differential.
Well lets hope that the Mets can do something in the bottom of the ninth!
hmmmmmm this is interesting the Twins starting rotation of 2001-02(top 5) consisted of Milton(current Red); Loshe(current Red); Rick Reed(former Red); and Joe Mays(former Red)
Over in Shea Stadium, Isringhausen on to try and save the 7-6 lead for the Cardinals.
BELTRAN 2 RUN HOMER METS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CARDINALS FALL!!! 1 GAME BACK!!
What a finish for the Mets.
Carlos Beltran!!!
That one hurt BAD for the Cards. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for the Cards!
Isringhausen has now blown 9 saves this year, with the final quarter still to go. That’s horrendous for a closer.
IF we make it to the post-season, I think the Lohse/Milton question will be answered by who we’re playing. I suspect they’d want to put a lefty up at least once. And given the number of games they’re facing, I suspect they’d go with a four-man, at least until the WS.
I wonder if they’d consider going to a four-man rotation in September. I know Arroyo prefers it. Only 4 off-days from here on out, though. They could probably skip the #5 spot 3 times, and still keep people on normal rest. If Michalak/Franklin/Lizard is the option, I’d probably try to skip.
i do believe that is the first time i’ve ever rooted for beltran.
i agree. four man rotation. if we start clamoring for it now, we might get it before the season ends. reds have an off day in each week of september except the last one, so it can be done.
