Well, we didn’t lose 13-1 yesterday!
Okay, we have a good chance tonight to get that game back in the standings. Bronson Arroyo is starting for the good guys, and you have to believe that he will come out of his funk at some point. Why not tonight?
The Cardinals will counter with Anthony Reyes, a nondescript right-hander who made the Reds look very bad in last week’s series.
My enthusiasm is a bit dampened after last night’s dismal performance, but I’m still pretty excited about tonight’s game. I want to believe that the Reds are for real in this pennant race!
Discuss it here….

foxsports.com has the reds lineup as:
1. R Freel, RF
2. S Hatteberg, 1B
3. K Griffey Jr., CF
4. E Encarnacion, 3B
5. A Dunn, LF
6. R Aurilia, SS
7. B Phillips, 2B
8. D Ross, C
9. B Arroyo, P
it does seem sort of amazing how many redlegnation suggestions get implamented in the end, just a few weeks or months late. Hopefully not too late for this season.
Damn that lineup is pretty… good, powerful bats & speed up and down the whole thing!!
me likey.
Except for the minor adjustment of shuffling the spots of Dunn, Hatteberg, and Griffey, no complaints whatsoever. The main thing is always that the best players are actually playing.
I slaughtered two chickens and visited Arroyo’s website last night to appease whatever evil demon has been possessing him lately, so we should be good to go.
we should keep track of the record of this particular 1-8 lineup hah…as of now..1-0 *knocks on wood*
Commercials from Hell
:
1. “More, more, more,” JTM Foodgroup.
JTM has good burgers, but this commercial drives me up a wall, especially the close-up of the ‘mom’ after the little scene of her family dancing plays out in her head, and she runs down the aisle.
Add to the list…
red roof inn
grippo’s (some of them aren’t bad but they show them over and over)
ohio lottery…because it lies…odds are you’ll have fun..the only way it’ll be fun is if you win…and the odds are you will LOSE
The only part of the Red Roof Inn commercials I like is when the guy says “The chances of me working are… (holds up remote control) remote.”
you don’t like the multi-tasking song? it’s so passionate. (finally, i’ve waited so long for people to talk about these comerials!)
more, more, more…the only thing i want more, more, more of is this lineup. Morron must have taken his meds today.
yes and yes
yes the multi tasking “song” is very passionate haha
yes..more of this lineup
just realized, hatteberg is the onle .300 hitter in the lineup..i’d like to see freel, edwin, and BP bump it up a few points..just makes it look better when they’re over .300
My favorite is the “Tommy Mac” ad, which plays only rarely now. A still photo of some chubby guy w/ a goatee, with rainbow-ish graphics behind him, and a corny-ass jingle (“for purhcase or refi, I’m your guy! Call Tommy Mac, 888-468- Looooaaaannnnnnn!”)
the RH hitters need to attack Reyes early in the count and take away that sweeping curve that gave us trouble last week.
Here We Go! Love the Line up… Perfect order! Jerry’s plan is obviously to back Bronson with Run support by putting an explosive offensive threat. I agree with spliting up Jr and Dunn in the order, because of the eliminating the high dp percentage and the shift they are able to use… As hot is EE is he should be batting cleanup. The 6-7-8 spots is a definate improvement. Should see plenty of Red’s crossing home plate tonight(let’s just hope that it is not back to the dugout after striking out!)
is it just me, or has freel really been in a tail slide at the plate since “The Game?”
it seems like hatty should be the 2 guy, but dunn really did well when he was there. i might switch them back.
Freel hasn’t done much over the past week. That’s par for the course – he’s had some prolonged hot and cold periods this year. Hope it doesn’t last a month.
Good at-bat for Hatteberg here despite eventually grounding out. Would like to see the STL work a little harder than Carpenter did last night.
freel may have jolted too many of his few brain cells during that catch.
4-pitch walk to Eckstein? No good.
freel may have jolted too many of his few brain cells during that catch.
Let’s be honest – between the drinking and the talking to the midget inside his head, I don’t think our guy’s got many cells to spare.
oh you’re kidding me. Bronson!10 pitches 2 of them for strikes!? To get to pujols!?
total set-up, obviously.
WTF is he doing!??!?
What’s the word on Edmonds? Still dizzy I guess.
Whew
he’s all over the place.
Nice – important doubleplay – out of Pujols, no less – and started by our favoritest SS.
Edwin is so hot right now.
And that is exactly ehy Encarnacion is battin cleanup. (1-0) Reds!
Woo hooooo
Richey should get this rally started. Very solid 6-7-8 spots coming up!
Dang It! Sorry guys I may have jinxed that at bat.
I live in cardinals country and their tv guys say edmonds may have a slight case of post concussion syndrome stemming from perhaps a play vs the white sox where he banged the back of his ahead against the CF wall.
Does Anyone really care bout the wild card race… I don’t I want the Central, and we have to go through these guys!
thanks LVW.
That Edmonds concussion was way back in June. The brain is a complex thing, but it’s weird that something would surface – without aggravation – this long after the injury.
i was in a car accident three years ago and i still have issues with my head on occassion. brain injuries are scary.
Thats it .. I’m not saying anything nice bout anybody until they actually do something.. but statistics say atleast one of those guys (6-7-8) do something! Guess they are reservinbg it for later in the game.
Could care less of how or why Edmunds is missing, but I’ll take it as a blessing in disquise. We all know what Edmonds is capable of.
I climbed Mt. Whitney on Sunday and I only started thinking straight this afternoon (arguably).
Is it just me??? I enjoy watching Bronson Arroyo pitch more thabn any other in the game, so entertaining, that curve is mesmerizing when it is on!
If I was a Cardinal fan I’d probably be wondering why Belliard is not in the game. But I’m not, so no problem.
1-2-3 for Arroyo in the 2nd. If his stuff is there he gets better with location and velocity as the game progresses. Now he is up to bat. Maybe he’ll do what he did in his first 2 outings of the season!
Miles had 2 doubles last week vs arroyo.
By my calculations, “Just Say No” Krivsky has traded with 12 different clubs (15 deals) since taking over in February. Does that sound right?
LA, SD, PHI, NYM, MIA, WAS
MIN, ANA, BOS, SEA, CLE, and now TOR
ok that explains it. Thanks (again) LVW
Arroyo got things working again in that inning. The STL lineup tonight is only half major-league hitters.
Narron was on the XM morning show today.
Orestes Destrade (who is awesome, and should be on Baseball Tonight or Fox’s national game) referred to it as Arroyo’s “frisbee.”
It’s been a while since Freel homered; any takers?
Yeap , I think you got em all!
Freel just got on
orestes destrade IS on baseball tonight…just not often
I noticed last week vs. STL that Arroyo eventually picked up a batting helmet with only one ear flap.
Freel with the single. He hasn’t been very aggressive in stealing bases lately.
Please no steal attempts here. Let JR. hack.
Both of Jr’s parents have cancer?
DA, do you remember when Elizardo went up to bat w/ a helmet w/ the flap on the wrong side?
The other day I saw a list of players with the lowest on-base percentages in the majors. Griffey was on it – below .300 .
Well me personally will not give up Ion my favortie pitcher. Arroyo could easily have 12 or 13 wins if it weren’t for so many horrible blown opps by the pen, as iof late he has looked either withered by so many lengthy games or it has just been a mental slump. His backwards style brings a wanted aspect to the game, and we know what he is capable of.
Cornrollio should rebound, but isn’t the 2.54 ERA pitcher from the first half, either.
Yes – Jr.’s mom is about to undergo an operation for colon cancer, and Sr. was just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer.
I don’t remember that with Elizardo, but that’s pretty funny.
Now look who’s up. Come on EE. Bring it!
59 pitches for Reyes already. Let’s keep this up.
Reverse jinx – Griffey promptly walks as soon as I mention his low OBP.
EE is just a rookie hitter, very vulnerable at the plate.
That kid is good.
EDWIN DOES IT AGAIN
It seems to me Griffey is raising up on his swings instead of staying down and driving through the ball……………EE is EN FUEGO!
He brought It!
Wow – reverse jinx worked even with the tongue-in-cheek!
Two-homer night for our hero, 4-0.
Free at last, free at last!
The reverse jinx works !
Me Gusto Edwin Encarnacion.
I think that despite trading away two guys with decent power, this team is MORE reliant on the HR now.
btw..i had no idea about Jr’s parents, i give him credit just for being able to focus on the game at all, i couldn’t
Shall we start calling him Sir Edwin?
Sir Edwin has a nice ring.
Hal McCoy was in the WLW booth in the second inning tonight; he said that Jr. told the Reds’ beatwriters (and probably the broadcasters) about his parents a couple weeks ago, just to keep them informed, but asked them to not make the news public. An article suddenly appeared in the St. Louis paper this week, picked up at mlb.com and ESPN, and so now it’s out there.
how about Edwin Elite.
LaRussa loves his little games. Sends the pitcher on a hit-and-run.
Well I believe both of the previous hits were entirely playable, The first hit Hatties leather and the second BP’s. That one was a genuine hit. One thing I have noticed that when a play is missed, Bronson can slightly faulter…. but that prob goes for any pitcher.. proving that we are 14th in Defense! Need a dp or K here
I just got this new book, called “The Book,” which analyzes all sorts of different situations to see if the conventional wisdom is accurate. They determined that LaRussa was right – the optimal lineup is with the pitcher batting 8th.
(The advantage of having a decent batter on base when the top of the order comes up outweighs the extra ABs the pitcher gets in the #8 hole.)
They also said that the rational ideal lineup would have a bad pitcher never batting. Your #4 & 5 starters “should” be pulled every time they come to bat.
Arroyo facing another big threat. In the first, Pujols failed with two on and no outs; now gives it a try with one out and the bases loaded.
Pujols looks like he’s squatting in the woods when he bats..
Everybody’s attention is on Bonds using steriods, what about this guy at bat!
DP ball! 14th defensively.
Only need one more! Good job by Arroyo on Pujols!
TN, there were some eyebrows raised earlier in the year when the Grimsley situation came to light. Grimsley allegedly was referred to his supplier by a trainer, who is currently the personal trainer for Pujols.
But no evidence whatsoever – all just rumors and scuttlebutt.
Cue the circus music.
I just had a heart attack.
wow..that was close dunner
What is Dunn’s problem. That gave me a fraking heart attack! Nice pitching by Arroyo… Can’t blame him ther, That was really after strike 3, Bad call on the previous breaking ball.. Love my Tivo!
Premature question: Is a player allowed to win Player of the Week twice in a row? And has anybody ever done it?
I already knew that, Albert Pujols was a tiny guy at age 19.. Look at him now, thighs are bigger than my waist… But honestly he looks like he’s taking a dump in the woods when he’s batting, Once agin love the Tivo!
Whew. Close call for the great Reds defense.
Arroyo must be very glad to be facing this lineup. The part that has good hitters, he’s not doing well with them (exception being a couple big outs vs. Pujols). But the out-machines in the rest of the lineup are giving him room to wiggle out with no or minimal damage.
Richey just made up the run… Lovin it baby!
crap..i missed it
Aurilia! Boy, is he a nice offensive upgrade from Clayton.
Do you love the Tivo because you can pause on Poo holes taking a dump in the woods?
Thats preemptive for Player of the month!
can anyone tell me how to start a thread on here?
He squats in motion, slow mo rocks, even his facial expression.
bigredfanintn…hilarious
That and plays like Dunner’s earlier, or Freel on a daily basis!
yea somebody answer LVW’s question i was wondering the same thing one day
kinda like our 7-8-9 last night, right devilsadvocate.
Get to work Bronson. Do your thing. Rock N Roll baby!
I asked how to start threads on here a few days ago, apparently you’re not allowed to. I also want to be able to post pictures and stuff, cause I like to photochop pictures real funny-like
After we get some runs… right!
Blogs won’t let just anyone start a thread – only site admins. Some blogs have a diary section where anyone can post a diary entry, but not RN.
i’m a bigredsfan in Ah kin sah
How often do magrs pull a pitcher when facing another pitcher? La Russa.. What a successful idiot!
I think that a while back, there was some experimenting with image tags within a comment post. But it didn’t work. You may want to start up your own blog somewhere (lots of free places to do that) to house your photos and photoshops, then you can post links to them in your comments here.
Speaking of Pujols… I guess it’s not a strange stat that he has nearly 20 fewer games and still on leader board for HR’s… Smae trainer who ALLEDGEDLY got Bond’s hooked… but who’s to point fingers. He might get pissed have a roid rage and hurt me or something!
Back to the game.. Hattie almost got a hold of that one…
Bronson get your game on…
Rock – n -Roll
how did my message send blank..did i say something wrong..is it illegal to say i’m from ky? hah
btw Phils just swept the Mets.
Hatteberg is 4 for his last 21. A 5-game mini-slump.
Arroyo called for the pop-fly – very rare for a pitcher.
mlb.com has it listed that edwin hit a 2 run homer tonight..i dont remember that..maybe its a sign of things to come
1-2-3 HUZZAH!!
no way Clayton makes that play
he would miss it by 6 inches because that is what he seemingly always does
Aurilia shows off his best vertical range there.
I just noticed this, but the Chubs just swept the Asstros. Put a fork in ‘em.
this infield we have out there tonite…………all it cost us for this entire infield was rob bell and a little cash
JUUUUNNNIORRR!!!!!
there we go Jr
Kenneth is amused at concern for his prowess at the plate. 6-1 Reds, all runs on 4 homers.
As my esteemed colleague Steve has just pointed out, Junior has just tied Charlie Hustle on the all-time extra base hit leaderboard.
THAT TIME Griffey did drive thorugh the ball………..not only did the cubs sweep the astros; they did it facing Oswalt, rocket, and Pettitte and using 2 pitchers who likely won’t have a starting job come opening day 2007.
Dunn & Dunn.
DUNNER!!!!!!!!!!! god i love this
Poor ‘Helen Bornschrager’ was 1 batter away from winning the back-to-back sweepstakes.
If this was last night, “Farney,” the little man in Freel’s head, would’ve won.
Adam Dunn with a solo shot. Keep ‘em coming: I predicted the Reds would score 17 runs in this series.
Weaver does have a 15.95 ERA in 2 starts at busch this year so you may be on to something with that 17 runs.
Marquis pinch-hitting. Gotta love Tony LaRussa, Super Genius.
That’s right, I forgot Weaver’s going tomorrow. Reds should feast on that – though he did pitch well against them last week. And guys like Ponson have also had inexplicably good outings against the Reds this year, too.
DILEMMA! MAJOR DILEMMA!
I just discovered that “Angels in the Outfield” is on right now, as is the “South Park” episode featuring Intro-rectogestion, where they poop out of their mouths. I sure wish I had TiVo now.
Jeez, isn’t Duncan ever going to make an out?
Weaver is a head case, when they get him 4-5-6 runs early he’s usually effective, when they don’t he obsesses on every pitch and gets lit up.
This is Great! Defiantely not dependant on small ball!
This is helping my chance for the DVD, man we need to even it up and outscore em slightly in the series.
I’m originally from Troy, Ohio. Family all over Dayton and the Nati. Wife is from Circlville, near Columbus. I get plenty of Reds games on Fox Sports Ohio (Next year they will air 145 games, forget MLB – where they black out the games in your area!) Believe it or not there are a lot of Reds fans down here… Those that aren’t Braves fans follow either the Cards or the Reds!
Bronson is looking FANtastic!
Wow, as enticing as that South Park sounds . . .
That show is great when they’ve got something in the real world inspiring them to satire. Like the Isaac Hayes scientology controversy, or the 2000 recount, or the Mohammed thing. When they’re free to let their minds wander, they come up with things like introrectagestion.
Speaking of pitchers being tired due to innings pitched. Our #1 and #2 pichers are both amongst the NL leader board in innings pitched thus far in the season and complete games pitched.
Grand just said “Shawnweiss” the new aquisition is a lefty specialist, I hope so because his ERA vs. righties exceeds the 10 mark.
Oh no, I just typed “10″ Please lord give Arroyo his.
This is the typical Bronson I am used to watching… He gets better as the game progresses, because of his ability to turn on the heat later in the game after relying on his wicked breaker. 1-2-3
3 K’s through 6 innings for Arroyo, two in that inning. Sitting at 102 pitches.
gapper, you’re kidding, right?
102 is not to bad… He’s perfectly capable of 120-130, but wouldn’t be surprised to see action in the pen due to the 6 run lead… His 1 run allowed could have been eliminated if it weren’t for a couple of missed plays.
Trivia question, since the All-Star break how many games have the Reds won by four than four runs?
Freel was 4-22 at the plate heading into tonight since “the game”
MD – 4? I think I read that in a comment somewhere.
Answer=Once! Last week against the Cards. That’s it. Every other win has been a damn nailbiter.
Only 1? Yikes. Scary team.
Dunner now pulled ahead of Pujols in the HR race right!
Typo. I meant by more than four runs. Once. They have also won one game by four runs. The rest have been by three runs or less.
Six Reds hits, five have gone out of the yard.
And another walk for Griffey. Nice to see him have a pretty good night.
Thats partially cause it is crunch time, less than 50 games left, Every team knows if they have a chance, now is the time to step it up!
Bronson in the 7th 3 up two 3 down.
Arroyo had an easy 7th; he should be able to pitch the 8th then bring Weathers in to finish it.
Arroyo has finally done it; he’s avoided his trademark “Flood” inning, where he gives up 4+ in one frame and is lights out elsewhere. This is just what we needed. Enjoy #10!
Why use Coffey here? reds could use a little Coffey break.
Ross does NOT need to be in the game the last 2 innings when protecting a lead.
Albert pops up. Boy, controlling him is the key to controlling the Cards offense. Other than Rolen, he’s the only one who can do damage.
Well, other than Belliard, too.
Trademark! Have you been watching all season.. Braonson has had only four bad outings, three of those he had your so called flood inning, which two of those were assisted by an error and the other was helped by two missed plays including a double play that turned into 0 outs. Bronson Arroyo is the most talented pitcher in our rotation and he got run support this game. Once agin he should have atleast 12 wins this year…
Are you watchiong this game right now… The bull pen is trying to blow this one right now!
If anyone is interested, I really like the Cincinnati Reds.
Ye of little faith Gapper!
I wouldn’t call him the most talented. I’d still say that Harangatang has the best stuff. Bronson is good with keeping the tempo fast and keeping batters off balance. The differing arm angles and high leg kick helps him too, but stuff-wise, I’d say Harang has him beat.
don’t blame the bullpen on Ross’s defensive incompetence.
I’m no thinking clearly tonight. Who is starting pitcher tomorrow for Reds?
no=not. See I told ya I wasn’t thinking clearly.
All I would say regarding Arroyo is that he has lately been in a funk which has caused his ERA to rise like baking bread, and I’m quite happy now to see him come up with a dandy when it counts.
yes, certainly. Arroyo is still the man.
Lohse v. Weaver tomorrow.
ok thanks. I was hoping it would be Lohse. I want to see what he can do in a big game.
The anomaly of Weaver shutting down the Reds can’t carry over into tomorrow.
They said tonite that Arroyo is the first pitcher in MLB history to win 9 of his first 15 starts and fail to win a game in their next 10 starts.
FSN just did a little segment on Juan Castro, who in tonight’s game has been slinking around the dugout sitting next to whomever most recently hit a home run.
He was safe at first, but oh well…
Is that like a reward for hitting a homer? Get to sit with the coolest bench player?
Lohse, I believe, has big potential and wicked-good stuff.
Recall, my dear friends, that Anthony Reyes also had a nice game against the Redlegs last series, and he was banished to the showers in the fourth!
If David Weathers blows this game, I’m going to kick him smack in the a–.
Leadoff single.
I just can’t get Danny Graves out of my mind, so I’m nervous until the 27th out is recorded.
Okay, there’s the 25th out.
Not to make you more nervous, but it was David Weathers who started that fire in “the Danny Graves game” vs. STL last year.
Hopefully weathers closes this out without alloweing any runs… I really want that Big Red Machine DVD
thats a good way to get #26
I’m glad they put Castro in for defensive purposes. Not.
Actually, I don’t mind that move in this game. As long as it isn’t Clayton coming in, or EE coming out.
Hands of gol–. . . oh, wait.
gotta deal with duncan again though.
Castro already had his mind on the post-game spread.
Savor that error, sports fans, because it is one Juan “Manos de oro” Castro makes once in a lifetime.
How do I win the DVD’s?
Castro doesn’t commit too many of those, not going to hold it against him
RagTag- Aurilia took over at 3rd base. EdE is out.
And this one Belongs to the Reds!
AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!!!!
D’oh! Didn’t see that, Abner. That makes me much more unhappy.
But this one belongs to the Reds! Let’s win one tomorrow and be a half-game back!
A nice game, and a rare low-stress win. So wonderful to see Arroyo finally earn his tenth W.
jinx
good job yet again by Weathers.
..and #10 for Arroyo. Finally. Maybe this turns the tides…
I hope they simply abuse Jeff Weaver tomorrow
…like a red-headed stepchild.
soooooooooooo nice
I wonder what Daedalus will cook up for The Church tonight; can’t wait to read it.
It’s soooooo niiiiiice, I wanna sing the same song twice.
Taking the series would be H-U-G-E!!!
gapper, you’ll probably have to wait until later in the morning. i’m going to bed with crazy ideas in my head!
Let them out! The world awaits the reprise to “The Walrus and The Carpenter” with baited breath.
i just read something on the reds site on mlb.com and they had a down on the farm section and pointed out some players having huge years, and he mentioned zach ward…am i mistaken or isn’t he gone?
ward was traded for for for for cormier, no loshe, i mean lohse
DOUBLE E is DA MAN!!! … HEY NARRON!!! Keep Double E battling cleanup will ya
