Game thread: Cardinals at Reds — 2006.08.08

It’s a whole new day and the Reds are still ahead of most teams in this playoff race! Repeat that to yourself, then let’s send good thoughts to Eric Milton.

If Uncle Miltie pitches well tonight, the Reds can tie this series with Harang and Arroyo going ro finish the series.

I’m trying to think happy thoughts!

Tell us your thoughts, happy or otherwise, right here in tonight’s game thread.

My thoughts? Hmmm, well never play Majewski again! The Lizard needs a tune up! I wonder if Freel can throw a curve?
We need more players with Freel’s Heart and Passion for the game!

Go REDS! I’m holding my breath til we can chalk up a win!

The next (first) time we have EE at 3B, BP at 2B, and Aurilia staring at short I will post this sign…

Until then – with Royce at short –

Nice play by EE. (Bonus: Milty had to drop to the dirt to avoid it).

Both announcers applauding EE’s work ethic.

milton’s not throwing a lot of strikes, but i like the grounders. and i’m not going to knock him for walking fat albert.

Miltie lost Pooh Holes. Ump missed one though – def should have been a strike at 2-1.

Still a good AB from Dunn.

if jr doesn’t swing at the first pitch and GIDP that could have been a big inning. At least we got one, and Dunn had a nice 9 pitch AB before popping out.

    Lancaster on with Marty…

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

    …Majewski-gate the topic.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Marty asks if the Reds are partially to blame. Somehow, Marc takes that to mean only “why didn’t they get an MRI?”

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Marty ALL OVER Bowden, and by extension, the Reds for taking him at his word.

Marc says Belile is gone until roster expansion in Sept.

Silly move, IMO. He’s superior to Franklin, at the very least.

Man. Gotta give it to LaRue. He doesn’t make the dropped ball errors that Ross is guilty of. Guess who’s starting at catcher tomorrow…

    ReplyReply

Those errors hurt, but I’ll take Ross’s bat. How often does he screw up that play? Three times a year?

    ReplyReply
  • BigRedsFanInTN

Just turned on the game in time to see Rich Jack 1!.. and now Ross is standing on 2nd… Gotta love his bat not his speed. Got caught up on that one

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

These trivia questions on the radio broadcasts are just idiotic. I’d rather they discuss tomatoes or golf.

    ReplyReply
  • al

i also agree on ross. it’s tough to watch him mess those up, but blocking wild pitches, calling games, and throwing out runners are all more important defensive aspects of catching, and then there’s the hitting.

a catcher with a 1.000+ ops who can do all the other things competently has to start.

    how’d he get doubled off?

    ReplyReply
  • BigRedsFanInTN

Now everyone??? Good ???? Who do you consider to be the Reds MVP thus far in the season?

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Tough one. Adam’s contributed the most; Bronson was probably the biggest emotional boost; but Harang’s been the best pitcher.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Reading a Prospectus article about the making of the Tigers. In discussing the Urbina/Polanco trade, this:

As a general rule, anytime you have the opportunity to trade a middle reliever for an everyday hitter, take it.

    Ugh.

  • BigRedsFanInTN

Line drive caught and he was on his way to third.. No doubt he’s are best weapon behind the plate and next to it

    ReplyReply
  • Bill N.

Are they even trying to pitch to Pujols? (not that I mind, it’s working….)

Of course, if you’re going to put him on every time, you could plunk him.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

    Haha Eckstein. (Nelson Muntz voice).

    ReplyReply
  • BigRedsFanInTN

Alright Freel.. With speed like that all ya need is a slight bobble and your on base.. Which brings me to my question… I think it is a toss up between BP and Freel for Reds MVP in the Field and no doubt bout Harang on the Mound

    ReplyReply
  • Jeff

Plunk him a few times and we have to use the bullpen more. Voodoo Albert is much more discreet.

You know Aurilia can play SS, and that would then be an explosive offensive lineup

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

I have to think they’ve seen Aurilia over there, and don’t believe he has the range.

    ReplyReply
  • hammer1

Well it seems the qualifications for playing shortstop on the Reds is “knowing how to play the game” and being a leader. So I think Rich can do that, no? :-)

Plus, all the stats show uh-REEL-yuh having bad range at SS last year.

Clayton misses the chance to REALLY pile on.

Read an article today with a Ralph Kiner quote as lead in, along the lines of: two-thirds of the world is covered by ocean, the rest is covered by Gerry Maddox … if the ball goes into right field you kind of expect Ryan Freel to get it, don’t you (last inning triple notwithstanding).

Well, maybe there’s been catches AS GOOD as what Freel just made in MLB history, but I can definitely say there’s never been any BETTER catch I’ve ever seen. This coming from a lifelong baseball geek who loves to track plays like that down. That grab took it to the edge of human physical capability, without a doubt. Tonight’s #1 web gem for sure.

BTW, don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but can ANYONE tell me the logic of playing Clayton everyday? Seriously, HELP! Not a rhetorical question! First, Castro’s a better overall player (surely defensively at least), Aurilia’s a better offensive player and an accomplished SS from the past (yeah, yeah, I know he’s crusty, but his lack of range could surely be offset by his offensive production and veteran savvy at the position, right?).

But most importantly, Phillips SHOULD be there!. I don’t want to mess with him this late in the season either, but, geez, the guy’s the best athlete on the team, and it’s not like he hasn’t logged a lot of time over there in the past!

Even more importantly, that would get Freel, Hattie, and especially EE in there just about every day! Plus, Denorfia could actually get to play more than once a month as well!

WHAT AM I MISSING HERE!? Is it REALLY that risky to at least try BP or Richie over at SS? Why the hell is Narron being SO conservative? It’s like he’s playing not to lose, instead of being aggressive with a potentially more explosive lineup. I really just don’t see the sacrifice defensively that Narron apparently does by not playing Clayton……

And look, I know you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t when you’re the manager (as many bloggers on this excellent site are quick to point out), but come on, Jerry! Try it! I guarantee 9 out of 10 fans will appreciate that effort, if nothing else just to get EE the playing time he deserves.

Also, sorry this is so long, that was unintentional, but it’s good to see Lancaster clean up his blog. That was getting to be a real joke. All the guys on here seem to be REAL fans, and kudos to the fellas who’ve put this site together. Excellent stuff.

    GO UNCLE MILTY! GO REDLEGS!

I can’t wait to see that catch by Freel. Back when he first came up with the Reds, he got a spot start in CF and made the greatest catch I’ve ever seen – playing somewhat shallow, ball was hit deep directly over him, he ran straight back and dived into the warning track, somehow catching the ball and sliding just short of the wall. Just an all out, disregard-your-own-wellbeing kind of play, and I’ve never seen another catch like it.

That WAS strike 3! You tell him Stormy!

Think that ump was afraid to question Pujols’ knowledge of the strike zone? Maybe that kind of respect comes with being only the best hitter in the game.

I think a lot of Narron’s decision is personal-professional.. He and Royce obviously have a trust built up through the years they were together in Texas. I love the idea of having a offensive teams , but defense is the over looked aspect which does win ball games!

  • BigRedsFanInTN

He deserves the Pete Rose award.. do you see how Freel hussles every play,, he may have gotten 3 on that hit!

Freel is just short of over-excited. Glad he didn’t try for third there. Leadoff double, and let the LaRussa machinations begin!

Pujols took a called strike 3 last night. It’s pretty rare.

Devil, I remember that catch, too, and this one was pretty much just as good ast that one. Only difference is he probably had more of a visual angle on this play, coming a bit more from his left side.

Left side running backward that is.

I can hardly believe my calculator. If Milton can get the first out in his next start without allowing a run, his ERA will be below 5.00 for the first time since I can’t even remember.

Great start in a game we needed.

  • BigRedsFanInTN

He hits lefties so much better, the stat I’d like to see is when Dunn does strikeout.. I bet it is by righties 75% of the time.. He makes solid contact against the south paws, and he just started doing that this season!

    ReplyReply
  • Ethan Hahn

Yeah, he got into a rundown off third – but still, had enough wits about him to get two runners in scoring position by his dancing around…

Good point, BigRedsFanInTN about Royce being Jerry’s “boy”. Obviously, that’s probably the answer, but I wish Narron would quit thinking with his heart on this one. We’ve seen where that’s taken us before!

AND I do understand defense winning ballgames, believe me, but that’s why I’d rather have Castro in there. He’s got the best hands on the team.

AND, I still haven’t seen anyone verify how much Aurilia’s lost it in the range department. Is it really THAT much that his sure hands and excellent offense couldn’t make up for the lack of runs that Clayton can produce offensively? Is it?

I mean, if no one really knows (since it hasn’t been attempted or even discussed – at least publicly) then it should at least be given a shot!

    Again, sorry. A novel!

    ReplyReply
  • BigRedsFanInTN

    Don’t be sorry Steve,
Aurilia’s range is fine or else he wouldn’t play third. I think his agility may be a concern, but when he was at short we weren’t winning games like we have this season… So if it works don’t fix it… Narron likes to jumble line up, and that keeps everyone fresh and a little competion for a position makes youngsters like Edwin step up and perform!

And this one belongs to the REDS!!!!!

Speaking of announcers, George made a point I’ve been thinking since Freel’s “spin-around double”: This is one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen out of an individual player. As Ethan observed, even his rundown (which was exciting as hell) got the other runners over. Maybe I’m just a little giddy over how entertaining this game was….

Anyway, personal anecdote here about George: I happen to live in the subdivision next to Chris Welsh here in Northern KY, and one of his sons is in my daughter’s class. As a result, I’ve been to several family functions with the guy – not friends or anything like that but definitely a personal acquaintance with him over the last 6 years because of our kids.

Anyway, at his boy’s birthday party two years ago while talking Reds, I made the stupid comment of how lots of fans really give George a hard time for being such a goof. I said it good-naturedly and kind of off hand, but Chris (a very personable and amiable guy) pretty much clammed up right there!

Instantly, my dumbass realized what a stupid comment that was to bring up considering that the two guys work together very closely and are probably pretty good friends. Either that, or Welsh being an honestly nice guy, didn’t want to betray his colleague by knocking him, whether he truly thinks he’s a decent play-by-play man or not.

Regardless, I instantly apologize for stupidly putting him on the spot and thought that was cool of him for defending George (whether he deserved it or not) and showed what a class guy he is (and what a dumbass I am!)

Hadn’t thought of that in a while, but thought some of you might be amused by it, considering how if any of you guys are like me, I’ve always wondered about what Chris REALLY thought of George’s abilities as an announcer. Ha! Guess he’s not tellin’! (For the record, his response was kind of: smirking and looking to the side with only a verbal response of “Welllll……” That was it!)

Hey, here’s “You Know” Freel on the star of the game show! GO HARANG!

Man, I’m going Thursday, and if they can just pull tomorrow night off, which I’m sure will be a sellout with the Davey bobbles, then it’s gonna be the most electric game we’ve had since the ’99 “playoff” game with the Mets (which I happened to be at).

Who’s Kearns again??? WOW! WOW! WOW! I was at the game (again) tonight. So much energy in that ballpark tonight and plenty of fuel to keep the tanks full compliments of Ryan Freel. 3 for 4 and the best catch I have ever witnessed. I can see him getting a webgem at least once a week as long as he is healthy and starting. That guy is a baseball player, through in and through out. I think it would be tough to keep him from being an everyday guy from this point forward. What an answer to last night. Tomorrow will be tight… hope everyone has plenty of nail to bite.
