It’s a whole new day and the Reds are still ahead of most teams in this playoff race! Repeat that to yourself, then let’s send good thoughts to Eric Milton.
If Uncle Miltie pitches well tonight, the Reds can tie this series with Harang and Arroyo going ro finish the series.
I’m trying to think happy thoughts!
Tell us your thoughts, happy or otherwise, right here in tonight’s game thread.

My thoughts? Hmmm, well never play Majewski again! The Lizard needs a tune up! I wonder if Freel can throw a curve?
We need more players with Freel’s Heart and Passion for the game!
Go REDS! I’m holding my breath til we can chalk up a win!
The next (first) time we have EE at 3B, BP at 2B, and Aurilia staring at short I will post this sign…
Until then – with Royce at short –
sorry, i meant
EE at 3rd..ross behind the plate…clayton at short…BP gets the day off and freel’s in right
El Martino is reporting a near-full house tonight.
good..hopefully i’ll be part of a packed house tomorrow night..def. make it worth a 2 and a half hour drive
Nice play by EE. (Bonus: Milty had to drop to the dirt to avoid it).
Both announcers applauding EE’s work ethic.
milton’s not throwing a lot of strikes, but i like the grounders. and i’m not going to knock him for walking fat albert.
Miltie lost Pooh Holes. Ump missed one though – def should have been a strike at 2-1.
I don’t care for Scott Spezio. Guys my age and older have no business with that facial hair.
GamedDay says Milton’s really working Rolen down.
i HATE spezio. the worst part of that game last night was his HR. i hope he never gets another hit. 0 for the rest of his career.
watch kriv trade for him tomorrow and have it come true.
Note to Cardinals:
You’re screwed.
ug.
Ed E
Still a good AB from Dunn.
if jr doesn’t swing at the first pitch and GIDP that could have been a big inning. At least we got one, and Dunn had a nice 9 pitch AB before popping out.
Lancaster on with Marty…
…Majewski-gate the topic.
Marty asks if the Reds are partially to blame. Somehow, Marc takes that to mean only “why didn’t they get an MRI?”
Marty ALL OVER Bowden, and by extension, the Reds for taking him at his word.
“Majewski seems relieved.”
EFFING ROSS DROPPED THE BALL AGAIN!
Someone tell the Reds that Molina is terrible.
Marc says Belile is gone until roster expansion in Sept.
Silly move, IMO. He’s superior to Franklin, at the very least.
Man. Gotta give it to LaRue. He doesn’t make the dropped ball errors that Ross is guilty of. Guess who’s starting at catcher tomorrow…
Those errors hurt, but I’ll take Ross’s bat. How often does he screw up that play? Three times a year?
Bad Man!!!
i agree on belisle. i’m glad marty’s teeing off on bowden, these are the times it’s great to have an angry old man calling games.
why is majic relieved?
RICH!
1300 career hits for Aurilia
Maybe he’s tipping his pitches.
Keep it up. We need to pin a nice 17-run on the Cards.
Oh, for Pete’s sake. Dammnit Ross!
Just turned on the game in time to see Rich Jack 1!.. and now Ross is standing on 2nd… Gotta love his bat not his speed. Got caught up on that one
These trivia questions on the radio broadcasts are just idiotic. I’d rather they discuss tomatoes or golf.
i also agree on ross. it’s tough to watch him mess those up, but blocking wild pitches, calling games, and throwing out runners are all more important defensive aspects of catching, and then there’s the hitting.
a catcher with a 1.000+ ops who can do all the other things competently has to start.
how’d he get doubled off?
Now everyone??? Good ???? Who do you consider to be the Reds MVP thus far in the season?
Tough one. Adam’s contributed the most; Bronson was probably the biggest emotional boost; but Harang’s been the best pitcher.
Reading a Prospectus article about the making of the Tigers. In discussing the Urbina/Polanco trade, this:
As a general rule, anytime you have the opportunity to trade a middle reliever for an everyday hitter, take it.
Ugh.
Line drive caught and he was on his way to third.. No doubt he’s are best weapon behind the plate and next to it
Are they even trying to pitch to Pujols? (not that I mind, it’s working….)
Of course, if you’re going to put him on every time, you could plunk him.
Haha Eckstein. (Nelson Muntz voice).
Alright Freel.. With speed like that all ya need is a slight bobble and your on base.. Which brings me to my question… I think it is a toss up between BP and Freel for Reds MVP in the Field and no doubt bout Harang on the Mound
Plunk him a few times and we have to use the bullpen more. Voodoo Albert is much more discreet.
Lovin it Jr’s on and EE is up.
I feel like the Reds have about 17 hits already.
Okay, it’s 7. But Marquis has only retired what – 5 batters? (Now 6).
Nice job by Dunn
Why do announcers give us “…in his last 32 ABs with RISP….” like that’s a sample size of some meaning.
And the big man gets another RBI. Notice whewre both the south paws hit those. Pulled em.. thats what they do well
Come on Bad Man…
pounding him inside.
Like having Aurilia/Hatteberg/EdE in lineup at same time, now if we could just figure out how to get Phillips in there too. Hmmm.
Bad Man!
WOOOO. Boy Rich making contact really well.. and another run. The bats are hot.
Man. Glad to see them scoring like this after what they did last night. Awesome. Keep it coming!
They’ll get a chance for that in the Series with the DH and all
a crooked number! i thought we were going for one run every inning, just for style.
runners, on your marks…
That’s all for Mar-kee.
Marquis couldn’t find his mark on that one… Fresh meat for Royce
Rolls Royce to face Jorge Soser.
You know Aurilia can play SS, and that would then be an explosive offensive lineup
I have to think they’ve seen Aurilia over there, and don’t believe he has the range.
Well it seems the qualifications for playing shortstop on the Reds is “knowing how to play the game” and being a leader. So I think Rich can do that, no?
Plus, all the stats show uh-REEL-yuh having bad range at SS last year.
Clayton misses the chance to REALLY pile on.
Granted you would have a defensive gap on the left side, but you have that everytime Edwin trys that side arm when throwing forward. Just a thought …. Royce is retired
Man tahnk god that broke
i’m watching gameday- was clayton as pathetic as my computer makes it look?
I think if that bint stays fair it’s a double. Where was Encarnacion going into the Cards dugout?
bint=bunt
Do you walk Yaddy here?
Come on Milton earn your $$$$… Bad luck on that last one… We need a K
Easy out here… Lets see fly ball???
That will work .. Well the Red’s highest paid player is earning it tonight… Milton keeps it up for a couple more and the game is as good as ours
is it just me or is milton starting to really get it these last 3 starts?
Ground out works just as well. Nice. Kets tack some more one…
*Let’s
Where do they get these Trivia questions… shoulda googled that one!
Alright Miltie… Yes Milton is becoming the consistency that he is expected to bring to the mound.
Well that was a rarity.. Ryan doesn’t hiut into too many DP’s
2 hits.. thats all he’s given up so far… and he’s getting the outs on the ground in the air and at the plate… Well make that 3 hits
Okay 4
Alright Miltie… Yes Milton is becoming the consistency that he is expected to bring to the mound.
Uh. Speaking too soon?
MVP! MVP! Gotta love Ryan Freel!
MY BOY FREEL!
I have chills listening to Marty’s play-by-play. Ryan Freel
AWESOME !
Getting rid of Kearns was ablessing because now Freel has a place in Right
Good to hear the fans pumped up too.
Jeff – I was just going to say the same thing. I just got in and I turned on the broadcast for that play. This sounds great!
Thats what Eric Milton does soo well, makes them get under it. Pop fly and we only need 1 more.
Read an article today with a Ralph Kiner quote as lead in, along the lines of: two-thirds of the world is covered by ocean, the rest is covered by Gerry Maddox … if the ball goes into right field you kind of expect Ryan Freel to get it, don’t you (last inning triple notwithstanding).
That was an out if the throw would’ve been inside the base runner
Wow – four walks for Milton? He almost never walks a lot of guys.
Look forward to seeing the video highlight later, bookmarked the one a few days back.
This a season-high walk total for Milton, and only through 4-2/3.
Got out of it… 2 run lead … Lets see em turn it on now…. Bring the bats!
Make Freel tip his cap!
Trainer trip to mound, yeesh, hope we don’t need another starter off waiver wire. Harang, Arroyo, and … Lohse, “Fra”, and “DFA”
Can’t pitch Jr inside or low.. He loves it there
EE is making the most of his oppurtunities. Hopefully Narron can grasp this.
Marty, don’t be so cranky. Look how well your Reds are doing!
With EE and Jr on , We’ve seen plenty of little ball, I want to see a long ball. Dunn lets clearem!
STL has turned doubleplays in three of the first four innings. No wonder CIN has only four runs to go with the 12 hits.
That is heads-up by Jr. The Reds are showing this crowd something tonight.
Come on Rich, make it pay off . . .
Not that time. Edwin’s a great hitter, Narron knows that, EE has to show he can play solid defense as well as hit the ball
I’ve never seent that work ! Until now.
There’s your Edwin.. Rookie mistake, second year mistake… I have my lil league pitchers do that one!
Ouch. That wasn’t the move ‘that hasn’t worked since Abner Doubleday was a baby’, was it?
EE just redeemed himself.. nioe snag
So is that it for Milton? Or do you leave him in to face the top of the order in the seventh?
1-2-3 for Milton
Milton due up third in the bottom of the sixth.
that last breaking ball by milton was brutal…that ball started around the batter’s shoulders n dropped in there..he’s got it workin
Ouch. That wasn’t the move ‘that hasn’t worked since Abner Doubleday was a baby’, was it?
I hope not.
Marty didn’t invoke my name…
Well, maybe there’s been catches AS GOOD as what Freel just made in MLB history, but I can definitely say there’s never been any BETTER catch I’ve ever seen. This coming from a lifelong baseball geek who loves to track plays like that down. That grab took it to the edge of human physical capability, without a doubt. Tonight’s #1 web gem for sure.
BTW, don’t mean to beat a dead horse, but can ANYONE tell me the logic of playing Clayton everyday? Seriously, HELP! Not a rhetorical question! First, Castro’s a better overall player (surely defensively at least), Aurilia’s a better offensive player and an accomplished SS from the past (yeah, yeah, I know he’s crusty, but his lack of range could surely be offset by his offensive production and veteran savvy at the position, right?).
But most importantly, Phillips SHOULD be there!. I don’t want to mess with him this late in the season either, but, geez, the guy’s the best athlete on the team, and it’s not like he hasn’t logged a lot of time over there in the past!
Even more importantly, that would get Freel, Hattie, and especially EE in there just about every day! Plus, Denorfia could actually get to play more than once a month as well!
WHAT AM I MISSING HERE!? Is it REALLY that risky to at least try BP or Richie over at SS? Why the hell is Narron being SO conservative? It’s like he’s playing not to lose, instead of being aggressive with a potentially more explosive lineup. I really just don’t see the sacrifice defensively that Narron apparently does by not playing Clayton……
And look, I know you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t when you’re the manager (as many bloggers on this excellent site are quick to point out), but come on, Jerry! Try it! I guarantee 9 out of 10 fans will appreciate that effort, if nothing else just to get EE the playing time he deserves.
Also, sorry this is so long, that was unintentional, but it’s good to see Lancaster clean up his blog. That was getting to be a real joke. All the guys on here seem to be REAL fans, and kudos to the fellas who’ve put this site together. Excellent stuff.
GO UNCLE MILTY! GO REDLEGS!
Damn, sorry ’bout the novel. These Reds just always seem to light a fire under me.
Milton had 11 Fly balls for outs.. most of which were to hit to Freel. Yeah he had a good game and deserves this win.. Lets see if the new and improved Bull Pen do their job.. Weathers is up 1st, and that was a strike!
I can’t wait to see that catch by Freel. Back when he first came up with the Reds, he got a spot start in CF and made the greatest catch I’ve ever seen – playing somewhat shallow, ball was hit deep directly over him, he ran straight back and dived into the warning track, somehow catching the ball and sliding just short of the wall. Just an all out, disregard-your-own-wellbeing kind of play, and I’ve never seen another catch like it.
Yeah, Stormy!! Attaway to get it done!
What has gotten into David Weathers? I’m not going to say another word for fear of a jinx.
stormy breezed through the 7th (including pujols) i say keep him in there for the 8th..no need in using more relievers than needed in my opinion
That WAS strike 3! You tell him Stormy!
Think that ump was afraid to question Pujols’ knowledge of the strike zone? Maybe that kind of respect comes with being only the best hitter in the game.
I think a lot of Narron’s decision is personal-professional.. He and Royce obviously have a trust built up through the years they were together in Texas. I love the idea of having a offensive teams , but defense is the over looked aspect which does win ball games!
He deserves the Pete Rose award.. do you see how Freel hussles every play,, he may have gotten 3 on that hit!
Freel is just short of over-excited. Glad he didn’t try for third there. Leadoff double, and let the LaRussa machinations begin!
Pujols took a called strike 3 last night. It’s pretty rare.
Devil, I remember that catch, too, and this one was pretty much just as good ast that one. Only difference is he probably had more of a visual angle on this play, coming a bit more from his left side.
Left side running backward that is.
Yeah, like I said, I can’t wait to see the highlight of that catch.
Come on, Griffey! You’re a hot hitter right now!
Now thats die hard
Wow. I’m not sure what to say after that rundown.
My Gosh, even Freel’s screw-ups are the most entertaining plays in the game!
Loaded the bases for Dunn!
What an opportunity for Adam Dunn. Bases loaded, one out.
Lefty against Lefty and Dunn wins again. Two run shot
Yeah! That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout.
I really, really, really like it when LaRussa’s matchups fail.
I can hardly believe my calculator. If Milton can get the first out in his next start without allowing a run, his ERA will be below 5.00 for the first time since I can’t even remember.
Great start in a game we needed.
He hits lefties so much better, the stat I’d like to see is when Dunn does strikeout.. I bet it is by righties 75% of the time.. He makes solid contact against the south paws, and he just started doing that this season!
Yeah, he got into a rundown off third – but still, had enough wits about him to get two runners in scoring position by his dancing around…
15 hits already.. and Richy is up and he’s seeing the ball well. Nice Sac
Double switch, BP in, EE out, Aurilia to 3rd…
Smart baserunny by Freel, at least there at the end.
I’ve also never seen anyone slide halfway between second and third before, but I admit it’s a nifty way to turn around quick.
Come on Bray.. I really think this kid has a lot to offer and will mature into a solid closer!
Finally scored off of STL bullpen. Whew.
Interesting that the lead-in bumpers on the radio tonight have had Brandon Claussen at least twice (“You’re listening to the home of the Reds, WLW”). I hope he can come back from the major shoulder surgery.
Good point, BigRedsFanInTN about Royce being Jerry’s “boy”. Obviously, that’s probably the answer, but I wish Narron would quit thinking with his heart on this one. We’ve seen where that’s taken us before!
AND I do understand defense winning ballgames, believe me, but that’s why I’d rather have Castro in there. He’s got the best hands on the team.
AND, I still haven’t seen anyone verify how much Aurilia’s lost it in the range department. Is it really THAT much that his sure hands and excellent offense couldn’t make up for the lack of runs that Clayton can produce offensively? Is it?
I mean, if no one really knows (since it hasn’t been attempted or even discussed – at least publicly) then it should at least be given a shot!
Again, sorry. A novel!
1 K
I enjoy reading novels. Keep the material coming.
This is the kind of game I was hoping we’d see last night. It’s been great so far.
Getting slightly ahead of things, but I’m looking forward to hearing the crowd noise in the ninth.
agreed, good game so far
Hmmm. Not cool to allow a runner to score from 2nd on an infield hit.
So, who’s going to pitch the ninth?
But Molina K’s on 3 pitches. That’s
Good inning by bray, that run wasn’t really his fault (wasn’t really BP’s, either, tough one to score)
Don’t be sorry Steve,
Aurilia’s range is fine or else he wouldn’t play third. I think his agility may be a concern, but when he was at short we weren’t winning games like we have this season… So if it works don’t fix it… Narron likes to jumble line up, and that keeps everyone fresh and a little competion for a position makes youngsters like Edwin step up and perform!
I’m going to guess Coffey in the ninth. Maybe Mercker, but I doubt it.
Isn’t mercker on the DL, DA
Mercker just reinstated in the flurry of moves yesterday, pitched an inning last night.
Sounds like Guardado is warming up.
my bet is that eddie is only warming up in case the cards close the gap but we’ll see
or is he the only one warming up? in that case..never mind
Ha – if Mercker was on the DL, I guess he would be doubtful for the ninth, wouldn’t he?
Everything’s rose-colored right now.
Good to know, thanks for the update DA. So is this LaRussa’s nanny nanny boo boo move of the night, lets bring in our effecient successful former red?
Isn’t his nick name Every Day Eddie.. I would love to see him every day… He’s our only true 9th inning man…. For sure save!
I’d like to see more on the board to make up for last night! 16 hits is not enough
Ryan Freel is king.
He just makes things happen.
Oh man! Can Ryan Freel make something happen every time he’s in the action! Forced error… didn’t know you could do that… He is a freakin Jedi!
Oh, I love it. Fantastic. As bad as last night was, that’s almost how good tonight’s been.
Things just happen when freel is in. He’s the human El Nino. Unexplainable, untrackable, unpredictable but mucking up crops from here to napa valley
Me happy.
Hatty! Keep tacking them on.
I think Ryan would’ve been safe even if the throw was down! And BP keeeps it going… Glad he got into the action!
Thanks Hatty.
Cool. Marty sounds really fired up, but in a good way for a change! Of course, one of the most exciting games of the year (Holy crap, Freel just did it again! I think the Cards are petrified of the guy!) and a sold-out house will do that to any fan – and make no mistake: Marty IS a fan, otherwise he wouldn’t be so cranky! Can’t recall any other human using the word “abysmal” more than he does….
Still Nobody out. Lets see if we can score more than the Cards did last night.
First one in the zone… I hope he puts one low or inside to Jr. Let him clear the bases!
I’m not listening to Marty, but I’m glad to hear that about him. He’s been awfully bitter lately. Glad to hear the Marty that we all know and love is still inside there somewhere.
Wow. Just noticed 17 hits tonight. Nice work so far.
Well let’s see, no outs, bases loaded and who is stepping up to the plate…. Big Adam Dunn! Wouldn’t A GRAND SLAM put the icing on this payback cake!
the biggest part of this night is doing it in front of a packed house
Definitely don’t need to see Guardado now – would rather see if someone else can finish it off and maybe get a little confidence.
NM forgot bout the double switch.
dunn isnt up yet..he’s on deck..this was edwin’s spot..looks like valentin’s battin
Let’s go, LLM. Make the most of your one at-bat.
Was Valentin running hard on that DP. Didn’t look like it to me.
I can’t get Marty here, wish I could… I really enjoyed watching the game on Fox regional coverage, They Mary’s boy called the game and you could tell he is a Cincy fan as well.
Thats as fast as he gets! but still a decent PH
help me
can u post on the main page and how
Dunn walks. Eighth batter of the inning coming up — Rich Aurilia.
Mary’s = Marty’s boy = Thom
Okay, Danny Graves doesn’t live here any more.
Let’s get through this ninth inning and go home!
On saturday, they split the screen to show both Brenneman(sorry if misspelled) and said one was good looking the other not, the good one refering to ol Marty!
Doesn’t Every Day Eddie get down to biz right away.. and it seems to me that he never wastes time.. He really keeps the game up tempo.
One away. Rock on, Everyday Eddie.
I guess they want to give Guardado a chance to settle back in after the arm discomfort that’s kept him out since last week.
See just as fast as I could type that.. He has K #1
I was appalled by the pregame and the one inning I heard from Thom and his partner. Thought it was just atrocious Braves rim job. Maybe it was the other guy, I wasn’t paying attention, and turned them off after the 1st.
Thats 2!
Make some noise, Cincinnati!
…And this one belongs to the Reds!!!
40,094 screaming happy fans… Got to love it …Reds Win!
What is GAB’s max capacity? I guess 40,000 is sell out numbers, but that can’t be it’s capacity.
Nice game!! Couldn’t have gone better for the Reds!
Take That!
Just fantastic! Now, two more just like it! Then three next week!
I love small ball…
Small ball?
Was that sarcasm?
Man, I can’t wait to see how electric the crowd is tomorrow night.
Was that sarcasm?
Well, maybe a little!
I guess not very good sarcasm, though, because it wasn’t all homers…a nice mix, though!
And this one belongs to the REDS!!!!!
Speaking of announcers, George made a point I’ve been thinking since Freel’s “spin-around double”: This is one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen out of an individual player. As Ethan observed, even his rundown (which was exciting as hell) got the other runners over. Maybe I’m just a little giddy over how entertaining this game was….
Anyway, personal anecdote here about George: I happen to live in the subdivision next to Chris Welsh here in Northern KY, and one of his sons is in my daughter’s class. As a result, I’ve been to several family functions with the guy – not friends or anything like that but definitely a personal acquaintance with him over the last 6 years because of our kids.
Anyway, at his boy’s birthday party two years ago while talking Reds, I made the stupid comment of how lots of fans really give George a hard time for being such a goof. I said it good-naturedly and kind of off hand, but Chris (a very personable and amiable guy) pretty much clammed up right there!
Instantly, my dumbass realized what a stupid comment that was to bring up considering that the two guys work together very closely and are probably pretty good friends. Either that, or Welsh being an honestly nice guy, didn’t want to betray his colleague by knocking him, whether he truly thinks he’s a decent play-by-play man or not.
Regardless, I instantly apologize for stupidly putting him on the spot and thought that was cool of him for defending George (whether he deserved it or not) and showed what a class guy he is (and what a dumbass I am!)
Hadn’t thought of that in a while, but thought some of you might be amused by it, considering how if any of you guys are like me, I’ve always wondered about what Chris REALLY thought of George’s abilities as an announcer. Ha! Guess he’s not tellin’! (For the record, his response was kind of: smirking and looking to the side with only a verbal response of “Welllll……” That was it!)
Hey, here’s “You Know” Freel on the star of the game show! GO HARANG!
Yep, I’ll take it every time.
I bet Ryan Freel is feeling pretty good right now.
Aaron Harang v. Chris Carpenter, coming up. As Marty put it, “The best these two teams have to offer, head-to-head tomorrow night.” Looking forward to it, especially if it can turn out like it did this time. Or the last time Carpenter faced the Reds.
Man, I’m going Thursday, and if they can just pull tomorrow night off, which I’m sure will be a sellout with the Davey bobbles, then it’s gonna be the most electric game we’ve had since the ’99 “playoff” game with the Mets (which I happened to be at).
Damn Al Leiter to hell!!!! (Uh….not really.)
Who’s Kearns again??? WOW! WOW! WOW! I was at the game (again) tonight. So much energy in that ballpark tonight and plenty of fuel to keep the tanks full compliments of Ryan Freel. 3 for 4 and the best catch I have ever witnessed. I can see him getting a webgem at least once a week as long as he is healthy and starting. That guy is a baseball player, through in and through out. I think it would be tough to keep him from being an everyday guy from this point forward. What an answer to last night. Tomorrow will be tight… hope everyone has plenty of nail to bite.
