Game Thread: Braves at Reds — 2006.08.05

Bronson Arroyo today. Can he get his 10th win? Can the Reds win two in a row against the Bravos? Can the Reds beat a young pitcher?

Will Edwin Encarnacion sit on the bench for a month, despite driving in the go-ahead runs last night with a double, because he made an error? Will Jerry Narron name Royce Clayton captain, since he thinks the shortstop is as good as Barry Larkin?

Lots of questions. I hope the Reds have some answers today. I know you guys and gals will have some answers to these pressing questions.

Answer them here, in the game thread, and watch the game on Fox’s national broadcast.

There needs to be a major party if Bronson finally gets over the hump. May it lead to a streak.

Freel is banged up a little bit after last night. Also EE took fly balls in the OF today.

I am getting tired of all this EE blather. He drove in two runs and cost the Reds a run with his throwing error last night. Until he can make the routine throw he isn’t going to play every day.

i agree redsfaninmd..people give all these examples of great players that had 20 errors in their first season but this team is right in the thick of the playoff hunt, they can’t afford questionable glove like that on the infield, i want him to play as much as anybody else, but i think he needs to work on his defense a lot more first

Clayton is not playing today so at least we don’t have to read 100 threads about how bad Clayton is (and I’m not a fan either but the horse is dead).

Again we will have to overcome the relentless efforts to suppress the offense. Clean up hitter, hot since all-start break, first inning, starter began year in independent league. How many reasons do there have to be to not call a bunt. Runner on second, not first. Successful sacrifice would be second out, no sac fly opportunity. We went through stats earlier in year, if I recall correctly, third and two outs increases chance of scoring one run, but decreases chances of more runs, we’re down two in the first. Who is keeping the mystery managerial decision file? Call of the game in first inning.

    ReplyReply
  • Jeff

Having gotten that off my mind … I like Arroyo’s chances for pulling it together better than the opposing starter.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Marty assumed that Aurilia’s “brain fart” was his own, not Narron’s.

    ReplyReply

Arroyo is a good bunter. That’s helpful.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Some guy emailing Marty, praising Freel for last night’s game. But not for the sliding catch or nearly getting that double late, but for climbing the fence to get a better view of the HR hit ten rows deep. IMO, there’s hustle, and then there’s silly.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Just to quickly recap the SF bit, Bonds came up in the ninth with a runner on and the Giants down by 3. He took a called strike 2 that he disputed with the umpire, but not histrionics or anything. So they’re talking, and then for some reason it escalated and the ump threw him out in the middle of the at-bat. And the SF fans threw a lot of junk on the field.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

But having been that type of player, myself, I understand that it’s not really the kind of thing that’s easy to turn on and off, so I won’t criticize Freel for his style. (I’ll just criticize people for praising the window-dressing).

Jeff-If you think Narron called for Aurilia’s bunt then you’re the moron. Aurilia did that on his own.

    ReplyReply

Brenneman still in conniptions over that Aurilia pop-up bunt last inning. But he swings away and pops out, too. Oh well, if Shiell stays out there there ought to be some more chances.

Definitely not a stellar first couple of at-bats for Rich.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Everyone is full of love for Freel today, conveniently forgetting the pickoffs they wanted to string him up for just 2 days ago.

Freel isn’t going to change. He’s going to make some incredible plays, and some real head-scratchers (or hair-puller-outers). At this point in his career, everyone knows what he does. Play him as much as you can without over-exposing him. 70% of the time seems about right.

    ReplyReply

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Nah, Marty made a comment when it happened, then briefly mentioned it when Rich came up the second time – in the nature of the “last time up…” thing they do with everybody. I actually think DA was over-stating it. (Good Lord, I’m defending Marty).

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

A double play would be splendid!

    ReplyReply

Nah, Marty brought it up as Aurilia came up for the second time, but with badboy taking over this inning he’ll get over it by the time he’s back for the fourth. Probably.

    ReplyReply
  • Jeff

I am not certain who made the bunt call, since we routinely question Narron, and the suicide squeeze call had to be Narron, I was leaning that way. Didn’t want to assume someone else could make such a seemingly goofy decision (I’ll give Dunn a pass for his brain fart earlier.) As batter, I probably want to swing against a guy who is getting pounded.

    ReplyReply

i think they should get rid of the infield fly rule. why should groundball pitchers have the luxery of the DP but not flyball pitchers? Plus it would be entertaining to see people try to turn it, since they’d have to let it bounce. I think there would be just as many close plays as there are with groundball DPs, if not more.

The squeeze yesterday was a totally different situation. Of course Narron called that. You can agree or disagree, I think it’s up for debate (it’s easy to disagree after the fact when the Reds ran into a double play). If Denorfia gets the bunt down everyone would have went crazy.

    ReplyReply

Mom & Pop Phillips should be given a new home in Cincinnati so they can attend every game. Awesome.

Castellini can cancel dollar hot dog days, just has to have BP’s parents come to every game.

Now Bray is warming up. I’m feeling much better than what we’ve passed the “Majewk Zone.”

Regarding my earlier post about Hatt: I forgot about his walks – those mean that he’s never totally worthless at the plate. Dunn has the same trait.

thing about hatty, he’s always been able to walk, last year was the abberation as far as that’s concerned. i’m less worried about his regression because i think he’ll alway get on base for us.

Way to cover the plate – great block. Just couldn’t get the handle on it, for which I’m very grateful!

Marty is (incredibly) tooting his own horn for not sucking up to umpires. Yes, it’s so courageous to spend 5 min. complaining about a blown call against the home team.

    *I love Brandon Phillips

*The one pitch Griffey can still hit is the low fastball

*Hatteberg HAS to slide there. What is it with this team and not sliding at the plate.

*Umpire missed the call on Aurilia. He was safe.

I would rather here Marty rip the umps for a bad call than George Grande say how great they are.

Maybe that’s who he’s referring to (“…some announcers suck up to the umpires…”)

Bray was nasty in the 9th. The hit he gave up was a great pitch.

Steve Lyons needs to shut the hell up. He was ripping the Reds about not using Eddie G and having a bullpen by committee. Eddie G threw 27 pitches last night and we all know he has had stiffness in his elbow in the past.

Eddie did throw almost 30 pitches last night. I’m hoping he’s not hurt.

all closers miss a save opportunity here and there. until eddie is used in a non-save situation, he’s the closer.

No 10 for BA, But a win is a win. 3 innings of shutout ball by the bullpen. Only 1 run total. Lets hope the BrewCrew stays hot against the Cards.

Guardado did have some forearm tightness last week. He’s been ‘everyday’ for most of his career, but he’s late-30’s now. If Bray keeps throwing like that the closer situation will be just fine.

    A few notes;
Marty’s boy and psycho Lyons sucked it up today. Tom said, “Aurilia used to be the full time third basemen, but not since the youngster, Encarnacion came back”. Then they started calling Castro, either Costro, or Cobstro, or some weird mispronunciation, and i didn’t appreciate the “griffey-like swing” comment either.

Didn’t mean to cut myself off….

I guess just like all the other major media people they don’t give a crap about the Reds, they give us no credit, and know nothing about the team. I expected more out of Tom, but Lyons has always been a bag o’ douche!

One more thing, has anyone out there but Reds fans ever heard of Aaron Harang!!! Please, no one else call Bronson Arroyo our ace!! Harang is our #1 pitcher and one of the better pitchers in the NL. I like Arroyo, but I would take Harng over him 100 times over!!!! AGREE?

Don’t know if anyone is still on this thread, but does anyone know who claimed Jones?

    ReplyReply

Several teams apparently claimed him, so the one whose claim was accepted is the one who was lowest in the standings (I think).

Ben Sheets pulled out of his start against the Cards after 1 inning. StL leading 4-3 in the 6th.

Brew Crew down to one last inning. At least it will be Graffanino, Fielder, Mensch, Hall. Outlook good.

    #206-That is correct.
