Hot-lanta comes to town tonight, with visions of extending the misery we Reds fans have been feeling over the last week or two. The Reds are now just two games over .500, and Arizona has joined Cincy in a tie atop the Wild Card standings. Yes, we’re sliding, but all hope isn’t lost yet.
Fortunately, Aaron Harang is on the mound for the Reds tonight. The Braves counter with a good young pitcher, Chuck James.
I love having Harang on the hill to start a series, because there’s usually a pretty good chance he’ll get things started on the right foot. Let’s hope that’s the case tonight.
Discuss it here….

Glad to see Encarnacion is starting…
…But it takes a special brand of moron to bat Clayton second. I’m tiring of Narron.
The whole line-up sucks tonight. Which probably means the Reds will go out and scored 10 runs
Looks like Narron is finally trying to get Edwin and Deno some playing time….
Can’t say that I would give Dunn a night off til we break this slump!
Royce Clayton: “In play, out(s) recorded.”
Veteran presence at the top of the lineup.
3 pitches, 2 outs. Really making this guy work.
wow, griffey looked like he was batting blind on that at bat
Reds are hitting the ball hard so far, but the Braves are looking like golden glovers
this team has gotta find some heart!
Griffey whiffs on 3 pitches.
1 Inning, 6 pitches.
Where is Nuxhall to tell us that Griffey’s “lost it?”
OBP = .291
Why doesn’t this team want to be in 1’st place?
Get this Frankenberry.
I dunno, Mike. Geo. Grande has been touting all the “pennant race experience” that Krivsky acquired.
does that really matter?
I just don’t think you can take a new player to a club and put them in a leadership role, therefor the playoff experience doesn’t mean alot
George, as usual, not paying a bit of attention. Other than Guardado, none of those guys have been in a pennant race in years. I think Clayton was on those Rangers teams in the late 90s (0-6 in the post-season, you might recall). Cormier hasn’t sniffed the post-season since the 1999 Red Sox. Lohse has actually pitched well in the post-season for the Twins…
Royce Clayton’s career post-season numbers:
AVG .244 OBP .306 SLG .244 OPS=550
45 ABs
I’m happy to see Arroyo wanting to pitch on 3 days rest to break up the pattern, he wants to break his losing streak in the worst way!
I would like to see Clayton warm the bench! put a bat in his place!
Harang getting more efficient.
A vampire bat?
I agree, he didn’t panic in the first and pitched out of the jam he was in.
I had the chance to see Randa play the other night on TV, I sure wish we could have held onto him another year.
I’ll take Cormier/Guardado in exchange, though.
And we sure don’t need any more guys to play in front of EE.
speaking of…
swinging at bad pitches, as it appears on GameDay
I’ve been working alot of overtime lately and haven’t been able to stay awake long enough to hear either Cormier/Guardado pitch, or any of the new pen pitchers for that matter.
GameDay reports the unprecedented “unknown strike,” and shows the pitch hitting EE in the shoulder.
catcher interference?
is it possible that every player on this team is trying too hard to be the one to jump start the offense, that they are swinging at anything?
Sounds logical.
Phillips hanging in there.
they just need to settle into a rhythm, and play up to their potental
come on Deno, your time to shine!
I sure am glad we play the braves and cards. I haven’t seen them play on TV in a month and a half!
We need Houston to heat up and take it to Arizona!
way to go Clayton ya goober!
this place sure is quite tonight
One thing you can say about these Reds is that there’s always a possibilty for a no-hitter.
Well, that just earned Ed 8 games on the bench.
No doubt.
why do our players even take a bat to the plate?
Didn’t Narron let Milton bat last night in the 6th inning down 2-0?
WOW
Tie game, whooohooooo!
great way to end a no-hitter. I attribute that all to Ryan Freel. He was really getting in the guys head.
now, this is a game!
Eddie!
somebody woke up the bats!
Holy crap, that could have been the worst base running I’ve ever seen. Typical.
ugly suicide squeeze turns into a double play! Way to blow the rally!
They knew it was happening.
I think your right
ARE YOU SERIOUS. 2 run double and then Encarnacion takes a seat on the bench. And amazingly this has happened before.
well it’s upto the pen now
Cardinals trailing 3-1
To steal from David Letterman, under much sadder circumstances: If I live to be 100, I will never, ever understand why he called that squeeze play there.
here we go/..
Majewski is consistent at least.
Pop Quiz, for you manager hopefuls. Your team’s offense has been in the tank. However, in this inning, your hitters have gone:
Out
Walk
HR
Walk
Double
Double
Single
You have one out and runners on the corner. Do you…
A. Let your batter bat.
B. Take a nap.
C. Head to the Mens’ Room
D. Decide that you need to “manage,” and put on a squeeze play.
Grading scale:
A – Grade:A
B – Grade:A
C – Grade:A
D – Grade:F
We need some mojo!
Question 2:
Your team has just taken the lead for the first time in four days. You’ve pinch-hit for your starter. Your GM has acquired approx. 74 relievers for your use.
Who do you put in?
D. Majewski
You failed again!
Amen!
Bronson Arroyo
ok who do we run out next?
I would love to see Arroyo come out of the pen on his off nights!!!!!!!!!!
The solution to our bullpen problems is simple. Underarm asians and knuckleballers.
taking a line from “Slapshot” the movie. Time to play old school! earn your money boys! You could be pitching every night!
Watching Narron manage reminds me of the Not-Safe-For-Redlegnation military saying involving a monkey and a football.
Let Freel pitch! He’d probably throw his body in front of every hit ball!
couldn’t you see freel charging the plate after every pitch…..
Yes, We start off every game. Milton inning 1-2. Arroyo take 3-5. Harange 5-8. and then Guardado to close it. Tell me that wouldn’t work.
Except for the Milton part of course.
LOL
I still say Majewski needs to shave. He is suffering from the Rick White beard syndrome.
How many homers would Clayton hit in a full season at GABP?
Majewski needs to be shaved right off the team!
about 2 less than the amount of errors he’d have
Deno!!!
ok LaRue is Due
So about 30??
That’s the standard the Red’s front office looks at, Error/HR ratio. You CANNOT have more errors than HR. That would basically explain the left side of our defense.
small ball, interesting
castro……..
It’s light hitting SS night at GABP!!
ok freel needs to jack one
Did Castro cause that bad throw?
hard to tell by radio feed
thank god I’ll get to see both games on tv this weekend!
well crud
I think the bat boy is warming up in the bullpen
How bad does it suck to be J. LaRue – you’re bunting runners over for Juan Castro.
Do you suppose the bullpen problem is psychological rather than physiological?
I am SO glad we fixed this bullpen.
Who’s the bullpen coach again?
I swear this game is a re-run!
Stormy?
We have a solid group of situational relievers. Too bad the situation requires us to be up or down by 8 runs.
8 is enough?
I thought Freel was going to kill himself!!
Holy crap. Now that’s what we need.
great job Freel!
It’s going to hurt a lot more when we end up losing!
Here’s the thing, I have seen zero games this year, I don’t know much about the Braves, but I know that Francoeur is the league’s biggest free swinger and there is no way you should throw a first pitch strike. Thus I am surprised that Gameday represents the first pitch of the inning as being right over the heart of the plate.
Imagine if that lady from LA that he sent to the hospital had been sitting over there!
hahaha. That was one of my favorite all-time plays, Jim.
I really thought there was going to be a chalk outline going on that right field railing.
what happened in LA?
WOOHOOO. Ladies and gentlemen. David Weathers. Go to reliever.
Who wants to bet Freel just made the #1 Web Gem of the night?
Let’s see…could Kearns have done that…uh…NO!!!!
I forget if it was last year or the year before but Freel went flying over the railing at full speed to catch a ball. In the process, he kicked some 80-year-old woman in the head and she was sent to the hospital.
“chalk outline” … that’s so funny it may keep me from continuing to be sick after this game. That would be as big a miracle as the Reds actually winning despite Jerry’s extraordinary efforts to blow the game.
Screw job by the ump.
oh, I rememeber that play, I thought maybe something happened last series
Junior is hitting so poorly that they should insert him at SS.
Absolute heart of lineup. Everyday Eddie trying to close it out. My moneys on Eddie.
ok 3 outs is all we need………..
It’s hold-your-breath time!!!
Come on, Eddie!!!
Shut them down!!!
uh oh
Gary Majewski as a Red
10 G
8.2 IP
19 H
9 ER
4 BB
ERA: 9.35
WHIP: 2.65
I never thought I’d mean this the way I’m saying it, but Esteban Yan he ain’t.
He ain’t even Mike Burns!
Somehow Danny Graves doesn’t look so bad
I hope the winter off brings us a different Gary Majewski.
Or Joe Mays, Dave Williams, Chris Hammond, or Rick White.
At least we have him for next year.
Do the umpires automatically shrink the strike zones in the late innings?
ok bring out the bat boy!
at this point I’m praying for extra innings.
Nice backup by Jr. Seriously.
load the bases with no outs?
I think the bat boy is a leftie
You’ve given yourself quite a job, Ed.
Danny Graves perfected the “inherit a 3 run lead, win by 1,” save.
tight rope time
Please Lord! Grant us a double play.
BTW, shoot that scout who said to give Francour first pitch fastballs.
ok we need a double play!
AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS.
yahoo !!!
Thank you LORD!
crowd is PUMPED. Good to see
NICE!
I wish I could say this is one of those huge “turnaround” games, but it feels more like one that we barely held on to win.
But regardless of how I feel watching on TV, the fans and players did look very excited about the game.
And Adam Dunn was walking next to the bat boy – he’s approx. 4 feet taller than that kid.
Overall great game. Bullpen held up (for the most part) Harang pitched well. The bats ignited there for a little while. Good start to the series.
Mil 4 StL 3
Ari 2 Hou 1
just heard the interview with Dunn, he said the bat boy was pumped and was ready to take the mound if needed!
Please Brew Crew. Send them to their eight loss in a row!
Harang 12 – 7 , who leads the national league in wins?
Webb Marquis Zambrano Harang all with 12
Ties him with Marquis, Zambrano, and Webb.
What a game! It wasn’t pretty but they found a way to win and sometimes pulling out a miracle like that can turn a team around.
*What a catch by Freel in right.
*EE keeps giving Narron every reason not to play him. He makes a great play with the glove and then makes a horrible throw.
*Griffey was safe at first but if he would have hustled down the line he would have been safe without question. That really ticks me off.
*Weathers has been great for the last month.
*HELL of a play by CAstro to turn the DP. That was 1) a tough stab and 2) and unbelievable throw. Give Phillips credit with a great turn as well.
well time to go watch the cards on tv, go Brewers
night Gents
There has to be an overhaul of the pitching coach situation in the offseason. I think Tom Gordon would suck in a Reds uniform.
… and Daedalus
Oswalt just helped himself with a 2 run single. 3-3 in the first
Maybe we should add Freel’s “you knows” to his OBP, no doubt he’d be leading the league. Geez, I know it’s been joked about before, but somebody needs to talk to him about working on that! Then again, even Grande has a pro broadcasting job, so……..
BTW, how come I don’t hear enough enough about how good Chris Welsh is? I think he’s as good as anybody I’ve heard.
Damn straight, RedsFan.
I’m glad we won, but to borrow a line from the recent “Bad News Bears”
Narron is a bag o’ douche!!
He sucks so frickin’ bad, I cannot believe we won tonight. It took some serious heart from a few guys, I hope its contagious!! (And a lucky swing of the bat from our crap pile of a shortstop)
St.L Loses. We finally gain a game! Lets see if the Lastro’s can hold up thier end of the bargain!
I cannot believe Royce Clayton hit his 2nd homerun in 3 games. And of all people to break up a no-no… As much as we all hate that guy, he is trying his damndest to change our opinions. I really like how no one even made a huge deal about it at that point in the thread. RedsFaninMd didn’t even make it one of his top 5 highlights. Hate him all you want, but he did what we all feared wouldn’t happen tonight. That was the momentum shift right there… no questions. And he made the over-the-shoulder basket out in left field. He is twisting my arm to make me respect him… I don’t know about the rest of you.
i just got home and i looked at the box score and saw clayton hit a homer and edwin had another error. but i couldn’t find either of them anywhere in the thread (i didn’t look real hard for the EE error so somebody may have mentioned) but hardly anybody even flinched when clayton homered, i’ve been just as unhappy as u all about how much he’s playing but when they guy is doing things to help the team win its hard to continue to hate on him…but some people find it easy i guess
Clayton’s going to have to do a lot more than 2 HR to be useful, let alone to justify that trade. But I’ll take it, nevertheless.
Justin/Brandon, I think the lack of comments comes from the fact there were only 1 or 2 people “here” when Clayton hit the HR. Maybe just Mike Martz. I was driving home from work at the time.
Just a couple of comments/questions/disturbing thoughts:
1. Scored a few runs without Dunn, Hat and Ross in the lineup.
2. Current best powerhitters: Clayton and Castro
3. Hat would have made a couple of the plays that Rich didn’t at first.
4. Listening to George Grande makes me long for Gordy Coleman.
5. I’m beginning to dig that JTM chick. I think it’s the little dance she does after she makes the bbq rib sandwich.
6. If Lopez and EE were both on the left side of the infield I wouldn’t want to sit in the first base dugout.
7. Best current reliever: David Weathers
8. Ever notice that George Grande always leaves the “damn” out of ‘Best Damn Sport Show Period?’
9. I think Hat should hit second more often. It just seems to fit very well. He takes enough pitches to give the leadoff guy a chance to steal a base.
10. I find it very disturbing the way George Grande keeps referring to Ryan Freel as “the little guy”.
11. A double play on a pitch out?
12. Best defensive outfielder: Ryan Freel.
13. Sure glad we added those extra arms in the bullpen. Sheesh.
14. I felt better when Weathers came in.
i was thinking about bringing up number 8 myself preach…that bugs me..why won’t he just say damn….but did anybody notice (assuming houston and washington hold their 9th inning leads) the reds are 1 of only 2 home teams in the 15 games that won…how often does that happen?
Chris,
Just to add to the point: Clayton has two homers over his last eight plate appearances after having zero in his previous 730. Is there a stat on that… there can’t have been many that have done something like that.
oh by no means does Clayton have any impact on “the trade”. He was merely incidental… that is it and that is all. I was purely commenting on the fact that I DESPISED the guy three nights ago when he f’ed up that easy double play. He has since come out and played hard, both offensively and defensively. Running out ground ball errors, making great plays, HITTING HOME RUNS!! It’s going to be hard to keep beating up on the guy the way he has been playing the last couple days. As soon as his hustle slows though, I will be the first to start ripping.
D-Backs and Cards lose… Makes tonight a HUGE win for the RedLegs.
