Game thread: Dodgers at Reds — 2006.08.02

Elizardo Ramirez vs. Brad Penny tonight at the GAB, in a game that the Reds really need to win.

Will Edwin Encarnacion play tonight against the right-handed Penny? My guess is that EdE will be back on the bench once again, but I hope I’m very wrong.

Until then: Free Edwin Encarnacion!

That Jerry Narron is so compassionate. Letting EE out on a midweek furlough is a wonderful idea.

Royce in there batting 8th… He is 1 for 10 against Penny. Castro is 3 for 6. Make sense to bench Castro…. Narron is retarded.

    ReplyReply
  • The Mad Hatter

Come on Sam after Royce’s wonderful performance last night he deserves to start today and everyday according to Narron. Just be glad he didn’t ask to bat 2nd tonight just to feel more comfortable.

    Edwin batting cleanup *thumbs up*
Ross behind the plate *thumbs up*
Clayton in the 8 spot *thumb sideways*…can never be too glad he’s in the lineup but at least he’s not gettin any higher than 8th lately

    ReplyReply
  • John R.

That would almost be better. Batting Clayton 8th is like having 2 pitchers at the bottom of the lineup.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Do you, or do you not understand that Clayton “knows how to play the game”?

Jerry’s word should be enough for you. We’re leading the wild card, for goodness sakes! (If Phoenix wins and we lose, will we still be able to use that as a response to everything)?

EdE has been freed- for one game anyway.

  • John R.

Narron also loves Majewski because “he comes right at hitters.” I could go in there and come right at hitters. His numbers with the Reds show that he is definitely coming right at them.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

. . . and the baseballs are coming right back at Majewski. Repeatedly.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

That quote makes me think of a dirty joke about what hitters do when they see Majewski on the mound. Sorry.

    ReplyReply
  • John R.

I won’t believe EdE is in the lineup tonight until i see him at bat. Narron might PH for him when he comes up in the 1st/2nd inning. It might also be Aurilia in an Encarnacion jersey.

“Castro’s had some success against Penny, and my heart told me it was important to get that runner over in the first inning. So I pinch hit for Encarnacion.” – Jerry Narron, in about 3 hours.

Great defensive play by EdE. I doubt RA would even have gotten there.

    ReplyReply
  • al

i’m wondering, the problem with EdE’s d is his throwing accuracy, presumably because he drops down. But he makes plays like that all the time, where he has to throw off balance.

i wonder if throwing off balance actually makes his throws more accurate because of his mechanics. Maybe he just needs to make all of his plays like that. field the ball routinely, then dive and throw.

see the madness you’ve driven me to narron!?

    RBI double for Penny

    ReplyReply
  • Abner

That seems to be EZs weakness – giving up big hits to the opposing pitcher this year. I remember he gave up a bomb to a pitcher after Marty was complaing about how EZ was pitching saying “come on now, he’s not Babe Ruth”. Then Bam!

Looks like we are playing comeback ball again. Hope we get the bats going.

Back in the eighties, at some point in just about every Braves broadcast, one of those yahoo announcers would always say, “This would be a good night to paint the seats.”

    My two cents on tonight

*Doug Eddings is one of the worst umpires in baseball

*George Grande is one of the worst announcers in baseball

*Devils advocate you may want to check on WEathers stats. I believe he’s given up two earned in his last 11 appearances or something close to that.

Not much more to say. Dull effort tonight.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

I’m going to have to watch my flippant remarks; I am quite aware that Weathers has not given up a lot of runs lately. Chris Hammond also had one good month this year.

Weathers has been used in more non-critical situations, and it’s agreed with him. He did promptly give up the lead entrusted to him in that Milwaukee game, which the Reds came back and won anyway, but that’s been it. I don’t see a huge improvement in his performance – 7 BB, 4 K in 11 innings coming into tonight – but the results have been perfectly fine.

Tonight was a lackluster game. STL working on an improbable comeback but still a ways to go, they’re down 11-7 in the 8th.

What I had to say real quick was that tonight was completely ironic. I swore off going to more games if Clayton started at second, but how am I to go through with that when he hustles out to get to 1st on the E-6, makes some good defensive plays, AND hits his 1st HR in recent history. Man did he tag it good too… you should have seen that thing in person, great swing and perfect contact. But that being said… I will more than likely wake up tomorrow hating him just as I did yesterday. I hope he can keep turning it around so I can eat my words.

The STL pitching staff is looking stretched, stressed, worn, and anything other than good. If their starters continue the way they have, the reds have a legitimate shot at this division… they really need to start playing and winning like they want it though.
