Game thread: Brewers at Reds — 2006.07.23

Wow, what a ballgame last night. In many ways, it was a perfect ballpark experience: great weather, a ton of good plays, the Reds displayed some offense. Of course, it was almost ruined by Joe Mays (has he been DFA’d yet?) and David “Stormy” Weathers (has he been DFA’d yet?), but Ryan Freel didn’t allow that to happen.

Let’s hope today ends with another win, and a sweep of the Brewers. That will put the Reds at 8-2 since the All-Star break, and in a pretty good position as we stare at the last week of July.

Discuss it here. I’ll be enjoying a cheese coney for you at Great American Ballpark.

Barry Zito is available as a rent-a-player from the A’s. It’s doubtful the Reds could get him but who would you give up to get Zito. Interested in people’s thoughts.

    Eric Milton vs. Tomo Ohka.

Aurilia starting at 3b, batting cleanup. Valentín behind the plate, and Castro at SS.

What would I give up in trade to get Zito? A lot less than Billy Beane would accept.

Awesome – Freel has displayed a much better arm from the outfield than I ever realized he had. Throws out Brady Clark at home to deny the Brewers the first run of the game.

Griffey badly needs to start taking some pitches. Seems like he’s swinging at the first offering an awful lot, only to fly out routinely or ground into a doubleplay.

Hey, I just realized what we could give up for half-a-season of Zito – Austin Kearns. Oh, wait . . .

Milton really laboring. 2-0 Milwaukee here in the 2nd.

jr is a going through a really rough stretch. it’s hard to defend batting him 3rd with the numbers he’s putting up right now. hopefully he gets hot for the late run.

i know narron wants to keep guys sharp, but this lineup is pretty crappy, all things considered.

Well, it is a Sunday lineup. Hopefully that’s the most we ever see it – once a week, tops. I wonder if anyone has asked Narron about the possibility of Aurilia playing SS.

Finally! Freel gets the first hit of the day. He’d better not get picked off at first.

That was weak for Weeks. Has anyone ever seen an ump make the call that a batter did not make an adequate effort to avoid being hit by a pitch?

the reds are going to have to figure out ohka today, no feasting on their middle relief. he’s only thrown 79 pitches so far in his 6 innings of one hit ball.

    ReplyReply

yeah, DA, i’ve seen that call twice, and it’s always been hotly contested. it has to be a tough one to make.

damn milton, 0 and 2 on hall and he walks him.

  • The Mad Hatter

2 of those balls were borderline. Milton pitched great today. If Phillips doesn’t bobble that grounder in the 2nd it’s 0-0 right now

will Narron stop bringing “The Magic Man” in the game with a crucial situation. Coffey, Bray, Standridge any of them have proved to be better options

The moron twins doing the Milwaukee broadcast keep mentioning that the Reds were so willing to walk Hall, completely ignoring that Milton kept the pitches right around the strike zone.

I’d rather see Weathers in there or at least today Narron go with his heart and leave Milton in there.

man, krivsky and the scouts are looking pretty damn stupid on the maj part of the deal. what the hell, this guys worse than what we had.

and he’s thrown more than any of our guys, so maybe he needs a lirrle rest but narron keeps going to him.

Claim shoulder tendinitis or whatever but as soon as Belisle gets back put Majewski on the DL and let him rest a little.

al, I’ve seen the umps make the call that a player moved into the path of the ball (once with Biggio, who dipped his elbow guard down to take a changeup off it) but I don’t recall an ump making the call that the batter didn’t try to get out of the way.

Griffey leads off with a hit. We need more. Milton pitched well, better than his final line thanks to the bullpen & inherited runners, and deserves better on this particular day.

i think that biggio hit was one of the times i’m remembering too. The other was A’s redsox at fenway and i had pretty decent seats but i could tell you if it was a move into the ball situation or not. if i remember correctly it was jason kendal at the plate and matt clement on the hill last year, and clement was immediately enraged after the ball hit him, so maybe he did move into it.

Marty: “I tell you what, if he (Majewski) keeps pitching like this, it sure doesn’t make the trade look very good.”

    Or words to that effect.

Kendall & Biggio – the worst offenders. LaRue is a ways behind those two.

and the Majic Man stays out there. That’s it Narron go with your heart.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Ah, he’s facing the bottom of the order now. That’s ok. Majewski isn’t giving up homers – just a lot of singles, really, and a couple doubles down the line. So there’s a little bit of advance warning when he’s going bad, as opposed to the sudden strike of a homer off Yan or Weathers.

Ohka blows up this inning. That’s what my ‘Majic’ 8-ball says.

DA, this brings us to the topic of body armor. i think it’s something that MLB needs to adress seriously in the next CBA, but i doubt they will.

i love Papi as much as any redsox fan, but i don’t know of any elmow injury he’s ever had that would justify what he wears (i think they have ot have some reason to wear that crap right?) and it gives him and anyone else who wears it a pretty huge advantage.

he’s such a huge guy, when he has no fear of a ball running in on him, he can completely dominate the plate, and the result is what you see… complete domination of the pitcher.

if they don’t do something about it, someone should tell grif and dunn to start using it, it would certainly help both of them, dunn especially since he stands so far away from the plate.

though i do like it that the reds guys are “clean.”

    4-1 Brewers.

why not pinch hit for castro in that situation? do we need offense or do we need offense?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Kearns is the guy who should be wearing more of that armor. Certainly he can justify it with the injuries he’s suffered over the past several years.

There are rules for the type of guards you can wear at the plate, but you can receive a ’special dispensation’ to go beyond the book. Bonds, & indeed Ortiz come to mind. They are apparently easy to get.

Freel, Dunn, Junior to start the ninth-let’s get it going now.

No Turnbow. Instead, Dan Kolb tries for his first save of the year. Kolb started the year well after a horrible 2005 in Atlanta, but I guess he came back to earth because he now has a 5.81 ERA.

Once again, Kenneth didn’t work the count, but he singles on the first pitch. 2 on, one out for Rich Aurilia. No GIDP, please!

at least we get the tying run to the plate. you can’t win them all, but the reds are keeping themselves in every game they play, which a good trend.

    let’s go rich!

ohka pitched a great game, which he can do from time to time, and with our lineup there wasn’t much to be done for it.

good to see milton have a pretty strong start.

looking ahead we have harang at clemens and arroyo at pettite coming up, should be good matchups. next week we get the ’stros and the brewers again, winning both series would go a pretty long way towards solidifying the wildcard race as the reds vs. the nl west, who we get into the week after.

pretty important stretch coming up, though i guess it’s all going to be pretty important since the reds are contending, it’s just going to take me a while to get used to that.

O.K. it’s time to put Aurlia back on the bench vs righties. He’s not so good defensively that you can excuse a .670 OPS and batting him cleanup to boot. EE has a .862 OPS vs righties.

One way to get Jr. jump started is to move him to the 5 slot. he hates that and the last time it happened, he came out on fire

We may not see Berkman in the series; he left today with a groin injury.

mike, couldn’t agree with you more, i think it would be a great move right now. and LVW, agreed we should go back to playing rich at first against lefties with the occasional start at SS maybe.

    I’d go something like:

    Freel
    Dunn
    Hatty/Rich
    EdE
    Grif
    phil
    Clayton/Rich
    Larue/Velentin
