Game thread: Rockies at Reds — 2006.07.15

The Reds attempt to take game three of this four-game set with the Rocks tonight, and the chances are pretty good, one would think, with Bronson Arroyo on the mound for the good guys. The chances would be better if Castro and Clayton were both on the bench. We’ll see….

Unfortunately, the Cardinals are pretty hot, so we have to win tonight to keep pace. But…you can do it, Reds!

Well, I just checked and Clayton is playing and batting 7th.

    For the Rocks:

    Carroll 2B
    Sullivan CF
    Helton 1B
    Holliday LF
    Atkins 3B
    Hawpe RF
    Torrealba C
    Quintanilla SS
    Cook P

    Man, that’s a bad lineup.

Why the hell isn’t Aurilia playing SS, with Encarnacion at third and Clayton on the bench?

Narron is a moron. And I can’t believe how much this organization undervalues a future star like Edwin Encarnacion. Why can’t they just stick him in the lineup every day and let him play?

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Good question, Jimmy. I wish I knew the answer.

EdE isn’t hurt again is he? I hadn’t heard anything like that.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

    I don’t think he’s hurt. I just think Narron doesn’t like him.

How long until he’s traded for a mediocre relief pitcher?

    ReplyReply
  • Narron is a complete Moron with a capital M. HE should be traded.

    ReplyReply
  • p.s. Majewski and Bray are not mediocre, so get over that.

    ReplyReply
  • The Mad Hatter

p.s. but Aurilia takes the term mediocre to an all new level for the last 2 years. Actually I think the word I’m looking for is vanilla

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Ummm…who said Majewski and Bray are mediocre?

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

No, they’re not mediocre. They’re above-average, but just barely.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

They’re closer to mediocre than they are to being stars. But I’ll take above-average relievers any day. I like these guys.

They weren’t worth what Krivsky paid for them, but I’m not unhappy to have them on the roster.

    ReplyReply
  • Mr. Z

ugh i’m so sick of hearing about this trade! we don’t know if Krisky went for more talented Relief Pitchers or what not. But what team that is not in the playoff picture has great relivers! So lets just wait and see what happens.

    ReplyReply

The Bad Boy is talking to Krivsky on the radio now.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

    Krivsky is very defensive.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Short interview with him, but he sounded to me like he was worried that he had made a mistake.

    Let’s all hope he didn’t.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Okay, Krivsky is back after the commercial break with more comments.

He actually said that Clayton can replace Lopez.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Wow, he just said that Clayton is an upgrade at shortstop. I’ve lost all faith in that guy.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

An upgrade. Sheesh. I can’t believe he said that. Does he think we’re stupid?

I can see how this trade can be defended, but saying that Clayton is an upgrade is a flat-out lie…or he just doesn’t know any better, which is worse.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

He’s feeling the heat, big-time, but to his credit, he tried to answer the hard questions that people are asking. Bad Boy said he’d let him off the hot seat now.

Yeah, I just noticed the “upgrade” remark!! “HOLY CRAP” was he serious? Has he ever watched Clayton play?
This goes far beyond stupidity, he may be a conjoined twin with Narron!!??!!

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

He said Clayton was an upgrade overall. He then went on to explain that he was an upgrade defensively, and a little worse than Lopez offensively…but the tenor of his comments were that Clayton was an overall upgrade.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

That’s the way I heard it, too, Jimmy.

    ReplyReply
  • abner

I’d say the Kriv is correct in saying that Clayton is an upgrade at shortstop, just not at the plate. Lopez had a big head, few real instincts at short stop – not tagging a guy on a steal, missing bags on DPs and tossing sure outs into the seats behind first base. Clayton has 7 Es this year, Lopez commited his 15th nor the Nats last night (glad it finally wasn’t for the Reds). So thats about a 50% upgrade. Not sure how to compensate for his streaky bat, tho.

Kearns I’m not happy about losing, but I’m much happier with turning the game over to guys who can strike people out that watching Kearns or Lopez for that matter whiffing with runners in scoring position with 2 out.

I’m in the camp of letting this thing play out and see if we get to the playoffs and if Kearns and Lopez tear it up in DC. I’m really tired of the Krivisky has “destroyed the reds”/”worst trade ever” talk. It won’t be proven or disproven for months. And it’ll be considered a success if the Reds make the playoffs. It was a success last night (save a run).

Go Reds. I’ll be a fan whom ever is on the team. As long as they win.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

I think Clayton has 12 errors this year, including a terrible one last night.

I’m not convinced he’s even an upgrade in the field. Maybe slightly.

    ReplyReply
  • Philip

    EXACTLY!!!!

Cry about the trade no longer, its over, just root for the Reds, or go cry every year for the rest of your life for a team like the CUBS or PIRATES!!!

And actually, I’ll be a fan even if they don’t win. They’re my team.

Anyone see the play just now? Nuxie said that Clayton couldn’t make the play, but from the radio (and the Lefthander’s description), I couldn’t tell if it was a very difficult chance or not.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

I didn’t see it, but they gave him an infield hit, so it must have been a tough play.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Clayton does have 12 errors, not 7. His range factor is a bit better. He’s a bit of an upgrade defensively.

But he’s such a black hole offensively that it’s absurd. We already had Castro, we didn’t need another one.

    ReplyReply
  • abner

Confirmed- Clayton has 12 Es this year. Don’t know where I pulled 7 from. So really only about a 20% upgrade…

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Yeah, it’s a defensive upgrade. Not overall, though.

Of course, it’s not like Clayton was the key to the trade.

The Reds have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 1995 and they did something to shore up their weakest area. Will it work? Who knows, but lets at least give it a chance. IT’s comical to see everyone bash these guys after two days.

I can say it because you NEVER EVER EVER give up two above-average everyday players for two non-closer relief pitchers (and assorted other nothing). It\’s insanity, and I don\’t need to wait any longer than two days to say that.

Anyone else notice that Naroon has been managing differently since he got the contract extension. Just seems that all these lineups based on “defense” have come about more frequently since the extension.

What does it say to Encarnacion that when he makes an error he gets three days off, but when Aurilia makes an error he’s back in the lineup the next day.

Someone made an excellent point earlier. If all it cost for the Reds current closer is Travis Chick, we did Krivsky have to pay Kearns AND Lopez for 2 setup guys?

    ReplyReply
  • Lopez has now left 13 runners in Scoring Postion in two games, so offensively you could actually say Clayton is doing just as good or better than Felipe, though I would like them to work Phillips there (SS) when they can….I’d go with Aurilia at 1st/2nd depending on the Lefty/Righty situation and bench Hatteberg at first but play EEncarn at 1st with Aurilia at 3rd with lefties. Aurilia at 2nd/bench with righties and EE @ 3rd w/Hatte @ 1st.

  • A lot of people are overrating Felipe Lopez (along with overrating Kearns, the main “slugger” in the deal… Check this statlog: Lopez in July- 4 for 29, 0 extra basehits, 5BB’s, 3K’s, 1SB. I think he had his best year last season….NL Pitchers have figured him out this year therefore the trade looks even to me so far. (With only two games to go on I really ought not judge the trade until mid August at the earliest, but I will) I Predict a 1 or 2 game gap between the Reds and Cards for the rest of the year. Unless we have Griffey or Dunn go down we will be in the HUNT!!!

The negativity on this board is amazing. I don’t see what Narron has done to deserve this. He is managing a flawed team and has them in first place in the wild card. Juan Castro is who he is, a solid defensive replacement who USED to be an automatic out but now isn’t that bad IN HIS ROLE. Anyone that says Marty B should be on permanent vacation should be shot at 12 noon at Fountain Square.
