Harang vs. Smoltz. Good matchup, on its face. A win tonight, Arroyo on the mound tomorrow…all of a sudden, the Reds have a chance to take 3 of 4 on the road and go into the All-Star break on a roll.

Someone saw me in my Reds cap the other day and actually made the comment that Dunn was one of the more underrated players in the game. This was from a casual fan.
I was surprised. Usually I hear the opposite, that he’s overrated.
It’s really a shame Dunn can’t play first. Nothing against Scotty, but it’d be nice if Narron could move Dunn to first in the late innings so we could keep his bat in the lineup.
One thing LaRue has done well this year is throw out runners…
They need to send Dunn to the Instructional League this winter with the mission of learning 1B. I think they just took for granted that he could play it.
And we should send Kearns to learn how to play third base.
In all seriousness, we’re going to need a 3B. I just don’t think the Reds are serious about giving Ed E an opportunity. He could be the 3B for this team for ten years, but the Reds don’t seem interested.
But the Giants are still in the race. I don’t see them getting rid of Schmidt.
I think the Pirates are going to be awesome next year given that they are one of the few teams with a decent bullpen and everyone is knocking on their door. I hope we can get Hernandez from their pen.
I figure when pitcher gives up a bunch of foul balls he’s not fooling people too much, also runs up pitch count. Case in point was Milton a few games back. Don’t remember which game exactly but recent outings have generally been short and mediocre. John Smoltz is definitely not Eric Milton, but there may be some cause for optimism; Freel, Dunn, Griffey each got a piece of something, seven foul balls total in first.
I’ve only seen Redman pitch once this year (it was against the Cardinals some time back). He is AWFUL. He threw slop up there that would embarrass Joe Mays.
Keeping an eye on the Cleveland game. How many more slams is Hafner going to hit this season. Guillen is an idiot for not selecting him to the AL squad but then Guillen is an idiot anyhow.
I’d stay away from Maddux this year. Reds would have to give up too much for his name, when he’s not pitching like the Maddux of old or even the Maddux of 2004-05.
Anybody have any idea why Homer isnt pitching for the Lookouts. His day to go was yesterday and isnt pitching again tonight. Is it because he is playing in the Futures Game? Just curious if anyone heard anything.
Well Gents, just got home from my daughters softball tourney, we got thumped all day long, maybe the Reds can brighten my day! umm, looks like we got some work to do.
“You’ve got to keep on playing. It’s a funny game, and nothing’s over until you celebrate at the end. Some people say the fat lady sings, but fat ladies don’t sing all the time. It could be a pretty girl singing. I don’t care what kind of girl it is, as long as we’re on the winning side.”
Homer Bailey is skipping a start so that he can pitch in the Futures game tomorrow.
It should also be noted that he is on pace to throw many more innings than his limit for the year. Expect to see longer rest between starts and/or shorter outings and/or an early end to the season for Bailey.
Marc Lancaster on the Reds allowing Harang to throw so many pitches:
Before the inning, Jerry Narron and Tom Hume conferred and decided it’d be all right to flip-flop their starters coming out of the break. So, with 135 pitches under his belt tonight, Harang will get an extra day.
Eric Milton will start Thursday against the Rockies, followed by Harang, Arroyo and Ramirez.

This is as good of a match-up as you get. Two good offenses. Two pitchers with similar numbers.
May Harang nail down win no. 10 tonight.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Win this one tonight, then we can worry about 3 out of 4.
Not a good AB by Freel to start the game. One away.
Mr. E out of the line-up again.
Hit one long and far, Dunner.
Dunn, 26 years old, 15 HRs away from 200. Wow.
Why is EdE not playing? Is Narron an idiot, or what?
Kid’s a super prospect, and Narron prefers Aurilia.
Didn’t we see this last year at shortstop?
I agree, daedalus. That deserves a wow.
the atlanta people said ede isn’t playing because he sux. well, basically they said that. he’s “not playing well.”
Actually tonight he prefers Freel. Aurilla is on the pine.
Someone saw me in my Reds cap the other day and actually made the comment that Dunn was one of the more underrated players in the game. This was from a casual fan.
I was surprised. Usually I hear the opposite, that he’s overrated.
He’s not been playing well? In what, two games???
i love dunn, even with the Ks. although i don’t love the Ks.
exactly, ben, exactly.
Well, the top of the first sucked pretty hard.
Was that Skip Caray and that bunch who said that about EdE? I think that explains it. Those guys are nuts.
So much for the Atlanta announcers knowing their opponents.
Is Skip Carey still an announcer for them along with Don “I bleed Dodger blue” Sutton?
Let’s see if Aaron can return the favor.
They’re no worse than George Grande.
I like Chris Welsh, though.
Come on, Harang-atang!
George is such a happy guy. He must be on drugs.
Who is tied with Dunn for most errors by an outfielder this season?
FSOH says that Dunn has 8 errors. I thought the boot the other night was number 9.
Edgar Renteria. He’s pretty good.
Harang got screwed out of the All Star game. Maybe one of the other pitchers will pull up lame…Harang has to be next on the list.
It sounds like Carey and Sutton – just the sound of their voices kind of puts me to sleep.
Grande isn’t on drugs, he’s just of the lesser intelligent persuasion.
Maybe Soriano is tied with Dunn?
Soriano is tied with Dunn.
It is Soriano – he has 8 as well. Of course, he’s not really an outfielder…
Alfonso Soriano is tied with Dunn for most errors. He isn’t even an outfielder.
Neither is Dunn, come to think of it.
I LOVE Jason LaRue. He has a cannon!
Francoeur and Guerrero are one behind.
It’s really a shame Dunn can’t play first. Nothing against Scotty, but it’d be nice if Narron could move Dunn to first in the late innings so we could keep his bat in the lineup.
One thing LaRue has done well this year is throw out runners…
Defensively Larue is taking advantage of his playing time opportunity. Let’s see if he can offensively as well.
Soriano has been involved in four double plays, though. That seems like a high total for an OF.
Reds should trade for Smoltz
And yes, LaRue has a gun.
They need to send Dunn to the Instructional League this winter with the mission of learning 1B. I think they just took for granted that he could play it.
Griffey has 3 errors but it seems like more, doesn’t it? That one last night was awful.
I’d love to have Smoltz, and word is that he’s on the trading block.
I think the Reds need to pursue Jason Schmidt. I think he’ll be easier to acquire and has better numbers than Smoltz.
Let’s not forget to raid the Pirates as well.
Kearns, I think, is pretty underrated defensively, though everyone knows about his cannon.
I’ve always like Kearns since watching him play in Dayton. I hope he sticks around for a long time.
And we should send Kearns to learn how to play third base.
In all seriousness, we’re going to need a 3B. I just don’t think the Reds are serious about giving Ed E an opportunity. He could be the 3B for this team for ten years, but the Reds don’t seem interested.
Or, I should say, Narron doesn’t seem interested.
Soriano’s DPs are probably partially a result of everyone trying to run on him.
But the Giants are still in the race. I don’t see them getting rid of Schmidt.
I think the Pirates are going to be awesome next year given that they are one of the few teams with a decent bullpen and everyone is knocking on their door. I hope we can get Hernandez from their pen.
Let’s see if the day off did “Oops” any good.
Good call, Greg D. But that doesn’t seem to explain him being tied with Torii Hunter…doesn’t he have a good arm?
Who made the NL ALl Star team at SS, other than Renteria?
Yes, GregD, it is true. Soriano can throw, that’s for sure, and teams have stopped trying to run on him.
I think you’re right RagTag. I think we could get something for EdE, since Narron doesn’t like him.
Cards up 7-6 on Houston.
All the rumor mills say Schmidt is available.
Reyes is the starting shortstop, Ben.
Man, Smoltz looks unhittable tonight. Almost.
and might i add, reyes deserves it
If they are going to give up on Mr. E at 3B the send him to the Instructional League to learn 2B. Move Lopez to 3B and Phillips to SS next season.
Oh yeah, Jose Reyes. I was trying to figure out how many people made it ahead of Lopez.
Felipe hasn’t played particularly well this season, but his numbers aren’t bad for a SS at all.
Yeah, Reyes is good. Much improved.
i’m still hoping the reds pursue redman, in addition to schmidt, smoltz, maddux, etc. maybe we can get two of them… ha ha.
I’m curious why Milton hits a wall at around 70 pitches. Is he not doing his running to protect his knee?
mental block, maybe?
I’ve only seen Redman pitch once this year (it was against the Cardinals some time back). He is AWFUL. He threw slop up there that would embarrass Joe Mays.
He’s the worst All Star selection history.
Just my opinion, of course.
Keeping an eye on the Cleveland game. How many more slams is Hafner going to hit this season. Guillen is an idiot for not selecting him to the AL squad but then Guillen is an idiot anyhow.
Yeah, Hafner rocks. Big time.
And yes, Guillen is a big-time idiot.
redman has pitched well and won six consecutive starts.
and no one is as bad as mays, even ponson.
We have to get Voodoo Albert going again. He hit a game winner today. Showoff!!
I’d stay away from Maddux this year. Reds would have to give up too much for his name, when he’s not pitching like the Maddux of old or even the Maddux of 2004-05.
gotta go to a party. cheer loudly.
Freel about got his head taken off but makes the nice play.
Party on, dude (or dudess, in your case)!!
I loved that line in “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”
Great!! George is speaking in tongues!!
Larue should be the spokesperson for Nike body armor.
Good pitching duel.
I love every line in Bill and Ted.
I like Socrates Johnson and Dave Beethoven most of all.
Oh no, a Bill & Ted party has broken out. Wyld Stallyns rule.
But that movie isn’t near as funny as “Billy Madison.”
Harang is rolling along!
Have fun at the party, daedalus. Hope it isn’t one of them Washington Nationals parties.
Dunn strikes out every once in a while, doesn’t he?
Okay, a double by Junior. Time to get some runs.
First and third, one out, after the single by Kearns. Need some runs here!
Hatty’s good for at least a sacfly, right?
Well, that was almost a three run jack. But I’ll take the one run on the sac fly.
That would have been a three-run dinger in Great American.
Maybe Phillips can hit one here.
Maybe not.
BP!! You are the best!!
LaRue crushed that one. Awesome.
Win your spot back, Jason!
Anybody have any idea why Homer isnt pitching for the Lookouts. His day to go was yesterday and isnt pitching again tonight. Is it because he is playing in the Futures Game? Just curious if anyone heard anything.
Hadn’t noticed that about HOmer. Good question.
I hope Harang didnt just run into a wall right here.
Junior misplayed that. Had he got back to the fence he could have likely caught it.
I hate innings like this. Two out damage.
This inning is falling apart rapidly.
I REALLY hate innings like this!!!
Well Gents, just got home from my daughters softball tourney, we got thumped all day long, maybe the Reds can brighten my day! umm, looks like we got some work to do.
Boy, that lead is gone just like that.
Harang can blame himself for not getting his tenth win here tonight.
The 10th win curse. Harang and Arroyo.
o.k. I didn’t wanna go to the well but today is my B-day win one for me boys!
Sometimes Freel is way overmatched.
I don’t think Bobby Cox is going to let the Atlanta bullpen touch this one.
Just like BP said,
“You’ve got to keep on playing. It’s a funny game, and nothing’s over until you celebrate at the end. Some people say the fat lady sings, but fat ladies don’t sing all the time. It could be a pretty girl singing. I don’t care what kind of girl it is, as long as we’re on the winning side.”
I don’t blame Bobby Cox.
It appears that the White Sox have turned their attentions to Andruw Jones for CF so I guess that will end the Junior rumors for awhile.
Rumors also say the Cory Lidle is available. Please NO!!!!
This really stinks!!!
Okay! We’re going to need VOODOO SMOLTZ!!! While we’re at it; VOODOO TOMAHAWK CHOP!
OK! Aaron has been screwed by the quick hook so let’s even the score a bit by mounting a CLASSIC REDS COMEBACK!!!
HOW ‘BOUT A BIG HURRAH SATURDAY!!!
I hate Adam Dunn.
The Reds had no hope of a comeback once Jerry Layne decide to widen the strike zone to anything that went in the catcher’s mitt.
Homer Bailey is skipping a start so that he can pitch in the Futures game tomorrow.
It should also be noted that he is on pace to throw many more innings than his limit for the year. Expect to see longer rest between starts and/or shorter outings and/or an early end to the season for Bailey.
Translated- We won’t see him in September. Maybe April 07 but not September 06.
So, would you shorten his season or let him go a full minor league season with the final 2 months in the bullpen?
Harang threw 135 pitches? I guess pitch counts go out the window at the all-star break!
Hey guys, write what you want…but Jerry Narrob is a horrible manager.
I wouldn’t want him coaching my kid’s pee-wee team.
