Can the Reds avoid the broom in Milwaukee?
The Cincinnati Reds will take the field on Wednesday as they try and salvage the finale of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Reds will send Elizardo Ramirez (3-6, 4.11 ERA) to the hill. Ramirez pitched in Cincinnati’s last win over Milwaukee on June 14, a 3-0 triumph as Adam Dunn homered in the 11th. The righthander struck out 10 over eight frames. The Brewers will turn to rookie Carlos Villanueva (0-1, 4.50), who will be opposing Ramirez for the second time. On June 14, Villanueva allowed four hits in six innings but did not get a decision in Cincinnati.
Root the Reds on to victory right here.

The Reds are 0-4 since Narron decided to stop batting Dunn 2nd.
Hasn’t Dunn batted second in three of the past four?
Any one’s WLW gameday stream not working?
Freel and López have drawn a lot of attention and throws over when they get on first this year. However, the Reds don’t seem to have been able to take much advantage at the plate.
LaRue certainly has been great on defense when he’s played. Throws out Weeks on the attempted steal just before Jenkins singles.
Also should note that LaRue made the most heads-up play I’ve seen by a Red in a long time, while running the bases the other day in the ninth. That play where Fielder tried to make the double-play by tagging first, then throwing to second for a tag-play. . . but as soon as LaRue saw him throw to 2b he immediately ran and dived back into first.
That’s the kind of baseball instinct that awes me.
Has he batted second in the past few games? Maybe my memory is gone. I haven’t watched the last two, and I didn’t even listen to yesterday’s, so I guess I’m just blowing hot air? Oops.
I’ve had no problems with WLW feed – wish I could say the same for MLB.TV.
lizard’s getting rocked.
st. louis is getting rocked by atlanta 11-0. hopefully the braves use up all of their runs for the next four games.
Boy, things just don’t look good for the good guys.
It’s only the fifth, and it’s only 3-1 Brewers. The good guys have plenty of time left.
you know who i can’t stand? melky cabrera. hit a grand slam against cleveland tonight.
just randomness while listening to marty complaining about all teams being represented in the all-star game.
yay, richie!
Hatteberg has both RBI so far tonight.
Yay Kearns!
WOOO! I think we got robbed. I didn’t even see it, but I think that was a home run.
A squeeze? Yuck. LaRue missed the bunt, and so much for that.
larue – why’s he still on this team again?
So, with one out, we don’t trust LaRue to get the run in from 3rd with either a hit or a fly ball?
does EZ lead the team in quality starts? seems like he never gives up more than 3 runs a game.
i don’t trust larue to do anything but throw out the occasional baserunner.
There should be some form of punishment for players who miss the bunt on a suicide squeeze.
There should be some form of punishment for managers who call for a suicide squeeze with a guy at the plate that can’t get the bunt down.
punishment for larue = trade him. eat the salary. mccrappen sux.
I think Marty’s point about All-Star representation is a good one. He pointed out that the NBA doesn’t require a rep from all teams. Neither does the NFL. I don’t know about the NHL.
Nice play by Gross.
That squeezeplay was an amazingly bad playcall to begin with. It’s only the sixth inning! If no one has faith in LaRue to even put the bat on the ball, then they ought to give up right now.
The Reds are not a team that has success with that sort of thing. Narron needs to lay off that stuff, because this team lives and dies with walks and raw power, not bat control and fine timing. Those plays have failed every time they’ve been tried this year. Play to your team’s strengths, Jerry, and put your players in a position to succeed!
He has given up 2,3,1,2,3,4,2,3,0,4,2,6 and now 3 runs. Plus a run in relief.
I thought Marty’s discussion about the Cubbies was interesting. It sounds like their fire sale starts Monday.
OK. Hall’s play clearly shows that the Reds are cursed!!
And now, for your viewing horror, 3 innings of the Cincinnati Reds bullpen!
Who knows what kind of inning that suicide squeeze ran us out of!!!
well, here goes the tie.
David Weathers, true to form. Coming up next, several more consecutive hits. Stay tuned!
Official bullpen song: Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard,
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.
Well, I see Weathers is on. I’ll just take this opportunity to head to the medicine cabinet for some Malox. God, I hate that guy.
without the rule of representation of every team, very few small market teams would ever get representatives. it’s bad enough that half of the AL team this year is from only three teams, and players like schilling were left off becauses of the rule.
“Felipe Lopez pops out, third baseman Corey Koskie to shortstop Bill Hall.”
I’m looking forward to seeing that highlight clip.
jerry narron should be fired for every putting this jerk into a game.
that’s for “ever” putting…
Gah, Weathers. Corey Hart hasn’t had a hit since the 80s!
Yes, I’ll show myself out.
It really is flabbergasting how much work Weathers has gotten.
i just wrote “i hate david weathers” on my notebook like a fourth grader. but i do. if i ever was sitting at a bar and he was there, i would actually throw a beer in his face. i think i would, anyway. at least, i do it in my mind.
and not even that DP will change the fact that i am still throwing the beer in his face.
5-2-3 doubleplay. Whew. By far the best we could hope for, out of an inning for Weathers.
so the one scoreless inning probably means he’ll be out there the next inning.
without the rule of representation of every team, very few small market teams would ever get representatives.
I don’t think you can say ever. I think there needs to be a reasonable effort to exclude the Mark Redman-type of representation.
Weathers’ ERA is down to 5.45 after that inning of sterling work.
Probably the last scoreless inning Weathers will ever throw.
i just saw the coskie-hall play on my online espn (courtesy of the chinese) on a baseball tonight update. wow. the look on lopez’s face was priceless.
Dunn’s stats sure fly in the face of traditional baseball wisdom. He’s hitting 70 points higher against lefties.
George and Chris talking about Shouse’s sidearm evolution. Maybe Ryan Wagner needs to look into it. Maybe the entire Reds’ bullpen needs to look into it.
Corey Hart’s biggest hits:
Sunglasses At Night. Maybe that would help me avoid seeing the Reds’ bullpen pitch.
Never Surrender. When the bullpen puts them down, the Reds can still come back and win it.
I hate to mention this last, but It Ain’t Enough. That’s when they can’t overcome the bullpen.
Even when he does get through an inning without giving up a run, he still looks like crap. Weathers sucks.
hopefully the last inning Weathers will ever throw. (i can dream.)
instead of jose lopez at 2B, mark grudz could have gone, eliminating the need for redman. and had ozzie not loaded the roster with his team, he could have chosen emil brown instead of jermaine dye.
redman is ozzie’s fault, not the rule’s.
mercker threw a good pitch. we’re screwed now, he usually only has one an inning.
Anyone think this is going to end well? Anyone…?
the national anthem’s music comes from a drinking song – hear that? ha ha. no wonder it’s better than most anthems.
Holy wow. Mercker strikes out the side, 1-2-3.
The point that Marty was making is whether the game should be an exhibition or a game that each side is trying to win. I, personally, am not interested in an exhibition and will probably spend little time watching the game.
Hit a game winner!
I think it will end well! Yeah!
Not sure I love Phillips pinch-hitting for tonight’s most effective hitter. Why not pinch-hit him for LaRue instead if Narron just has to make some kind of maneuver?
Am I guessing the reason for PHing for Hatteberg is to have speed on the bases?
Nice shot by BP!
Can’t argue with that, though. Leadoff double.
i think it’s b.s. that it determines home field advantage. that means another team’s manager has control over your team.
it used to be fun – remember when larry walker wore his batting helmet backwards when he was up to bat?
yeah BP!
how many runs do we need here to win? i don’t even trust coffey anymore.
Uecker thinks Kearns should be bunting here. Why – so LaRue can come up next and try a squeezeplay again?
remember when striking out three times in a game was terrible? the reds do it nightly.
I remember John Kruk’s clown-act at-bat against Randy Johnson after he threw a fastball behind him. That was a fun All-star moment.
I have to agree that it shouldn’t determine home field advantage. Just alternate years like they used to do.
It used to be fun when the players wanted to win the game bad. Certainly Pete knocking Ray Fosse into next week is one of the best examples.
that’s one thing larue is good at!
I’m surprised that BP hasn’t tried to steal 3B.
It used to be fun when the players wanted to win the game bad.
Amen to that. Too many players today view playing baseball as a job.
Brewer’s defense!
Isn’t that an oxymoron!!
Oh, fraggelbozzins.
the brewers have one of the worst defenses in the league, except when they play the reds. can we please get a break?
Like they’re punching a time clock.
But hey, here comes Turnbow – there’s hope for a win in regulation after all.
LaRue leaned (or, more accurately, “reached”) into that pitch worse than anyone since Rudy Stein. At least he did it bare-armed.
I’m sure the JTM commercials are somehow associated with the antichrist!
I think Turnbow is my least favorite player in the game right now. Hall kills the Reds, but at least I respect him. Didn’t Turnbow get busted for steroids? That, plus his idiotic hair, uniform, and schnozz put him on my list. Then you have Uecker (who I like) calling him “D-Bow.” Ugh.
Time for the squeeze play again!!!
Did we just call for the squeeze TWICE IN ONE GAME?
square frozen burgers are the antichrist. the sausages are the devils spawn.
JavaMan
You make my heart sing
You make everything
Come on, JavaMan
JavaMan, I think you move me
But I gotta know for sure
Come on and hold me tight
Oh you move me
JavaMan
You make my heart sing

Come on, JavaMan
JavaMan, I think I need you
But I gotta know for sure
Come on and squeeze me tight
Oh I need it
JavaMan
You make my heart sing
You make everything
Come on, JavaMan
Obviously, that woman and the kids in the commercial are possessed, probably from eating the sausages.
i’m still failing to comprehend how weathers AND mercker both pitched and didn’t give up runs.
hope it’s not coffey’s turn tonight.
In 2003:
“The USADA cited Turnbow for using a chemical derivative related to androstenedione, the substance popularized by slugger Mark McGwire in 1998.”
Andro was legal in MLB at the time. Turnbow’s test was not through MLB, which would have regarded the test as negative. Turnbow had tried out for the US Olympic Team, and the IOC regarded andro as a “steroid” and tested him as positive.
So it’s a fine line, but he walked it. Most of all, I like this lede in the Baseball America article: “Angels righthander Derrick Turnbow became the first major league player publicly identified as testing positive for a banned steroid, a result expected to have no impact of his major league career.”
This is why Freel doesn’t have a position.
Mr. E would have fielded that ball and promptly thrown in 15 feet over Aurilla’s head.
&#$%(^#@)&#%!
asstros lost, deadbirds lost, come on reds, beat the sausages!
i hate this bullpen.
brewers had two espn webgems.
can you believe we have to go back to milwaukee in a few weeks?
Throw the DP ball, JavaMan!!!
but turnbow is an all-star! he’s good!
god, hall is on deck.
4-pitch walk brings up . . . Bill Hall.
Time to even the score, JavaMan!!!
i think maybe tom hume is the anti-christ. or he ate the square frozen hamburgers.
Hells yeah!
wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!
I love BP!!!
Next time Weeks comes to the plate against the Reds, he needs to hit the dirt!!!
i think maybe tom hume is the anti-christ.
In other words, the antichrist is a geek.
What, did Weeks make an offending take-out slide?
he better not come up again tonight.
BP is an all-star in my eyes.
Let’s end this game, Reds!!! I have to return a video my kids rented.
Weeks was within his rights but I still want to see him hit the dirt because you don’t mess with BP!!!
Come on, Oops!!! Get a rally started!!!
anyone think that maybe a change in bullpen coaches could help? i knooooooooow the bullpen sux. i think about it ever seven seconds. but maaaaybe a new pen coach, one who’s a jackass and makes the pitchers angry, would help?
Time for the swing!!!
It depends. What exactly is the role of the bullpen coach?
what the
THE SWING!!!
i don’t know what a pen coach does. but they must do something, right?
WOOOOO!
DUNN!!!!!
Man!!! Dunn might be batting .250 before long.
harang should have made the a.s. team before d-bow.
Maybe I’ll send Hal McCoy the question.
Dear Hal,
What the @#$%^& does a bullpen coach do?
Best regards,
Jim
Turnbow is on the AS team?
One more time:
JavaMan

JavaMan

OK! I’m return the video now.
OMG.
It’s groundhog day.
F’ing Jenkins.
Turnbow is on the AS team?
Yep. Amazing, isn’t it?
Rumor has it that Pedro Martinez will go on the DL and miss the All-Star Game. How about Harang takes his place?
worst thing is, the brewers have lee on the team, too, so turnbow wasn’t even a rep rule guy. i think phil garner wants to lose because he knows the asstros won’t make the ws this year.
it’s weird, but i don’t even feel the anger or disgust tonight. i guess i’ve just come to expect this.
Maybe Harang can nail down a spot with a no-hitter on Saturday.
Turnbow was selected by the players. One more data point against “saves.”
Yay Griffey!
i have to go – to the hospital, just had a heart attack after that one.
BTW, I didn’t have to go return the video. My wife got tired of waiting and took it back herself.
Reds, please score a zillion runs this innings so the bullpen can possibly hold on.
cardinals got weaver.
Don’t bunt, LaRue.
The Cardinals are desperate.
He’ll probably win the Cy Young.
ross = hope.
Didn’t run on contact? Argh!
Being the manager of this team would have to be one of the most frustrating jobs in the universe.
yan’s pitching next. i should go to bed now.
Brenneman is now renowned. Uecker says, ‘I bet I know exactly what Marty Brenneman is saying after LaRue fails to get the runner in from third there.’
We’re doomed if Yan comes out to pitch.
Marty’s a well-known crank.
“I signed as a starter. Everyone knows Jason LaRue is a slow starter.”
Jim, you have to go with Netflix. No returns, no late fees, great selection.
Yan is squinting all the time. Maybe he’s like Rick Vaughn and can’t see.
i guess i’ll just finish this bottle of wine…
Oops knows you steer clear of a charging Freel if you value your life.
Hume: Do you understand that you can’t throw the ball up there?
Yan: Huh?
What is Freel doing out there? Or, more accurately, where is Adam Dunn? Oh, right. It’s much more important to get Juan Effing Castro in there. (Yes, I’m aware I’m a bit late on this, but I’m blocking out George Grande’s voice).
je deteste ce bullpen.
Is this like the end of days because the fact that these two bullpens are getting people out is just scary?
I guess they thought they needed Castro after Freel let that ball go under his glove at 3B.
Helling has a 7.15 ERA. Please hit him.
i just thought of a promotion the reds should do – first 20,000 fans in attendence get a free roll of rolaids. inside the wrapper is a photo of the bullpen.
That was pretty much a clueless AB by Freel.
If that’s so necessary, why not just pull Freel? It’s not like he’s Gary Maddox out in the outfield, even compared to Dunn. Half their lineup is now scrubs (a pitcher, Aurilia, Castro and Signed As A Starter).
You have to be kidding me. I hope they don’t bring in a guy with a 10+++ ERA.
Did you know that “bullpen” can also mean: A large cell where prisoners (people awaiting trial or sentence or refugees or illegal immigrants) are confined together temporarily.
This explains something, I think.
Freel flashes the leather.
Need every great play we can get with Yan still in there. Carlos Lee coming up.
So will the Brewers trade Lee and to which NY team?
Chattanooga also moving farther into extra innings. They’re now in the bottom of the eleventh, tied at 6.
Brian Shackelford gets to play fireman, coming in with two on and one out to pitch to Prince.
I can’t believe that Travis Hafner has to try to make the AS team in Final Vote. That’s insane!!!!
BTW, who are the HR Derby participants this year?
Fielder swings three times and comes up empty each time. He has been ice-cold as of late. Something like 3 for his last 38.
So after that brilliance, Narron immediately takes him out and brings on his second-to-last reliever.
If this go too long I bet he uses Mays (cringe) and goes with four days rest for everyone until after the break.
Reds are out of position players, and have one relief pitcher left (Belisle).
harang and arroyo can pinch hit.
All this coming from a manager who just got a two year extension.
It’ll be lucky thirteen this inning. Who’s due up? Castro, Aurilia, Phillips, Kearns.
Actually, Milton could be a semi-legitimate pinch-hitter. Not Mike Hampton or anything, but pretty decent.
i’d trade narron for baker. saw dusty manage the giants brilliantly. both just got extensions.
yeah! good start.
Just let Aurilla swing the bat.
That’s a wacky enough play for the thirteenth inning. Castro leads off with a weird ground-rule double.
If Baker managed the Reds, I’d feel very sorry for Homer Bailey.
He’s safe but that was stupid.
sweeet!
Wow. Castro heads-up!
Wow, didn’t expect this game to still be on.
Agreed that was risky, too risky – but better to be lucky than good.
I’d be livid if that hadn’t worked out, but it did. Another wacky play here in lucky number 13. Only thing wackier would be if the Brewers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
1-2-3? what’s that?
Very stupid. Nevertheless, George Grande was last seen humping Castro’s leg, while looking longingly at Rich Aurilia. (Rich’s successful bunt being upgraded from “good execution” or “nice bat control” to “very smart”).
If Grande covered a team with Derek Jeter, he’d explode.
I don’t know if I can cope with the bottom of the inning. Is Standridge finishing this thing out?
Is there anyone else? Belisle, I guess?
here we go.
I feel implosion.
I’ve never seen a triple play. Please let now be the first time.
Bring on Arroyo!
Why do we watch?
odio este bullpen.
I really hope the players beat the crap out of this bullpen tonight on the plane.
The offense should have won it ages ago. One run against the Brewers’ bullpen. You have to be kidding me.
if we were this bad at our jobs, we’d be fired.
That was bad. Very, very bad.
Sorry. Two runs over eight innings.
five runs in a game should be more than enough to win a game.
In nine innings, yes.
Well, overall our pen was much better tonight. 6 innings, 3 ER. Not great, but if it were coming from a starter it would have been a “quality start”.
I wish that could’ve happened in 2 hours, as opposed to 4.5.
Luck certainly wasn’t on the Reds side. They can ill afford that.
I really hope the players beat the crap out of this bullpen tonight on the plane.
I really hope the manager didn’t let the bullpen on the plane.
Well, they didn’t let Shackleford on the plane… oh wait.
