Game thread: Reds at Mets — 2006.06.19

Man, do they really have to play again today?  The Reds need a couple of days off to re-group.

Then again, the last time they went on the road, the Reds ripped through a couple of really good teams.  Maybe something will similar will happen this time.

My fingers are crossed.  Discuss it here.

Incidentally, the ‘99 team was fantastic on the road and just about .500 at home.

We must keep faith in these trying times, my friends. The reds will emerge victorious from this game. mark my words.

griffey’s shot was good to see, he and dunn have been rally killers lately, right in the heart of the order.

i’d like to see dunn higher in the order and griffey lower.

Man, this lineup is cold. Only managed two runs off the rapidly decaying El Duque?

On the other hand, Arroyo has held the hot-hitting Mets to just 4 hits. Fantastic showing for him.

Ah, Reds are threatening to tack some on against the bullpen. Two on, one out.

Ah, Chad Bradford. I wondered what happened to him. Here he is in the Mets bullpen, being called upon to put out the fire.

Excellent. Phillips double plates two. Hope they score one more so that Coffey doesn’t have to get used in a 3-run save situation.

Another reminder to write in Brandon Phillips for the All Star Game!

Any of you stat heads know where he ranks in the league in terms of RBI for a 2B? Gotta be up there, right?

    Phillips and Ross,
    Never heard of ‘em,

    Brandon and David,
    He got Bronson too,
    Each move, first a mystery,
    Turned into a coup.

I believe those RBIs move him into 5th in the majors and third in the NL.

Coming into tonight, Phillips ranked fourth in the NL for RBI by a second baseman. Dan Uggla leads, followed by Chase Utley and Jose Castillo. Closely bunched, so Phillips might be tied for second at the end of the night.

Finally made it. Doing my public service as a band booster parent tonight.

Hopefully the Reds are gearing it up for another winning streak to let the Cardinals that they aren’t going away.

As well as Harang and Arroyo have pitched all year, I’m very surprised that this team has put together any extended losing streaks. Seems like one of those guys would be the stopper every five days.

Don’t know how to explain Phillips, except that Cleveland just gave up on him too quickly. At such a young age, you had to expect some struggles. He’s only 24 right now!

They only gave him a half-season of ABs at ages 21-23. They should have stuck with him.

Why did Brandon Phillips fail in Cleveland? Psychological factors. Handed job too early, experienced catastrophic failure for first time, discouraged in minors. Classic change-of-scenery guy. Just like Corey Patterson, who is now coming back in Baltimore after being broken as a Cub.

    Does anyone like Bronson Arroyo?

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

    Me like.

    ReplyReply

I think the change of scenery thing, combined with a little maturity (as he’s gotten older), explains Phillips as well as anything else. He started very poorly in Cleveland, and as a young kid, he just pressed…meanwhile, lots of pressure on him, as a touted prospect.

He comes to Cincinnati, no one is expecting much, and he joins a lineup with some good hitters. No pressure, and he has thrived.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

Phillips had his problem though. He came into Cleveland with an ego bigger than Jacobs Field. But I think the Reds have communicated with him much better than the management in Cleveland did. Once he got into Eric Wedge’s doghouse he had no chance of ever getting out.

Well, whatever the reason, I like the results. He’s been very valuable for this team.

Would you rather have him or the guy who started at 2B on Opening Day for the Reds?

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Womack. Ugh. I’m trying to forget about him.

Of course, he gets on base much more than Juan Castro.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

Womack hasn’t had a hit since the Cubs left Cincinnati. Isn’t Todd Walker playing 2B most of the time since Nevin came?

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

Bronson has three more starts before the All-Star break so he could possibly have 12 wins by that time.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

    Walker should play more.

Actually, Walker is a Red that I liked quite a bit. I hated seeing him go.

Beltran is good but is he worth $13+ million a year?

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

Where would this team be without Bronson Arroyo? His complete game gives the bullpen a chance to regroup.

I save that only in the nicest way. I really think that rather than regrouping the Reds’ bullpen should be disbanded.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Beltran’s worth it this year. Last year injuries kept him down. Right now he’s the best one playing in the NL.

That’s not counting Pujols, who’s technically not playing right now.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

If you have the money to spend, Beltran’s worth it. On a limited budget, no, the money would be better spent elsewhere.

But he’s a pretty darn good player.

Just watched the game on delay and saw Philips’ humorous attempt to avoid the tag on the squeeze play. The Mets announcers thought that was an example of his “immaturity” that plagued him in Cleveland, but I didn’t see anything wrong with it. Make El Duque take five steps to tag the guy out. Point being, once you get tagged with the “immaturity” label, it’s hard to shake.

Agreed, Ken. Keith Hernandez says a lot of silly things. For example, all that nonsense about the Padres massage therapist – a very nice, very professional, and very valued member of their organization, I might add.
