Here’s a game thread. I’d say more, but…I’m at Great American Ballpark!
Let’s hope Elizardo can top Greg Maddux, and the Reds can continue the great ball they’ve been playing. If they don’t win, it will certainly be all my fault.

Great to know that the Reds have a sellout. Hope they make some noise and cause Maddux to completely freak out so that the Reds score tons of runs against him then demands to be traded to Cincinnati.
Kearns made up for his miscue by getting on base; López shall now do the same to begin to make up for his two gaffes (one on the bases, one in the field).
After the 1st major-league hit he collected last inning, and running the bases, the Cubs’ pitcher was supposed to come out and have his head in the clouds, throwing a bunch of batting-practice meatballs.
With as many things that the Reds did poorly tonight, and with as many freak occurrences that went against them, and with as many unlucky instances of hard-hit balls at somebody…it’s phenomenal that the game was as close as it was. Such as it is, it just doesn’t feel like a backbreaking disappointment of a loss.
I do hope that Kearns was not hurt badly on that one freak play, but even if he is, maybe Denorfia will get a look-see with some more substance.
I’m waiting for Phillips to get even on the breaks. That guy hits everything hard! With any luck, he would have been 4 for 5 tonight with the game winner.
This game was one that will haunt us if we miss the playoffs by a small margin. What a terribly frustrating game. Kearns freak miscue, Olmedo hits a leadoff double and no one can drive him in, bases loaded, no one out, a run in, and we can’t score just 1 more damn run? Ridiculous.
One loss is not the end of the world. If this team was supposed to be winning 100 games this year I’d be worried, but they’re not, so I won’t. If this had extended a 7-game losing streak I’d be concerned, but it didn’t, so I’m not. It broke an 8-game winning streak.
1-run games are, by and large, won or lost by the luck of the draw. And time and again last night Lady Luck favored the Cubs, perhaps taking pity on them. This game was lost but the Reds will move on.

Hopefully its empty in here because everyone is at teh old ball orchard…
Bad call by Randy Marsh opens the door for 2 Cub runs in the 2nd.
well. That cuts it in half!
The Bad Boy just said the game was sold out. Nice work, Cincy! Show’em you care.
Maddux is a machine.
So if Krivsky was shopping for a fifth starter or some long relief help where should he look?
Did Junior overthrow the cutoff man?
Great to know that the Reds have a sellout. Hope they make some noise and cause Maddux to completely freak out so that the Reds score tons of runs against him then demands to be traded to Cincinnati.
Guess there is a rumor that Pujols’ trainer was named in the Grimsley affidavit.
Voodoo Albert working overtime.
Reds are going to have to get the bats going. EZ seems a bit shakey in the early going.
Quick note since no one has mentioned it: Encarnación went on the the DL today.
Nice stop by Ramirez to rob Phillips. Does anyone consistently hit the ball as hard as Phillips?
Reds are hitting the ball hard. Only one of these hot shots wasn’t at somebody, though.
The Reds are hitting the ball hard but right at the defenders. Hopefully there luck changes or the Cubs defense goes south.
Ramirez is sitting at 67 pitches so he might have two innings left in him.
The .109 hitter owns Ramirez tonight.
That shouldn’t be an error.
Argh. An E-2 rears its ugly head.
Liz is Thin Lizzy at 6′0″ and 180 lbs.
Now that’s an error!
Where’s Ross?!?
Ramirez might someday make a great closer . He sure is getting his experience at working out of trouble.
That’s Gitty, EZ. Marty says his control isn’t where it normally is… But nice work to survive the 2 errors.
Jack City!!
I was slow the warm up on Hatteberg, but he’s sure made an impact on this team.
There we go – good throw that time from LLM, Cedeno caught stealing to end the inning, the unstoppable Henry Blanco left at the plate.
Alright! Rally time so the the Lizard can get the win.
Go Rainier! Way to take advantage of the opportunity in the majors.
Berry came close to screwing that up!
Hit too hard there. Keep those hits comin’!
Get’er dun’, Junior!
Olmedo didn’t try to score on the Phillips liner to right – he just wanted to give Griffey an RBI.
In 201 innings so far this season, Cubs relievers have walked 101. Horrendous.
Was Olmedo supposed to be going?
It’s up to Aurilia, then. He’s so hot right now.
I hope that inning doesnt come back to bite us! Stupid decisions all arround
What was Lopez doing? That’s a terrible time to attempt that steal.
Here’s an interesting stat: the Reds bullpen this year has thrown the second fewest innings in the league.
EspeciaLLY when you consider how many they threw last year and the year before that and the year before that and…
I hate Todd Walker. Lots and lots.
What the heck was that!!!
You gotta be kidding me.
Ouch. Bad bad bad.
Bad bad bad bad bad bad.
BAD.
Teh Cubs can bring out the worst in us
Lopez (2) and Kearns owe us big time
All those runs are earned, despite the two outs that were given away in that inning.
I think the Cubs have an aura of crappiness that permeates everything including the Reds.
Austin…pick us and you back up
Ah – Bucky $*%&ing Dent is the manager tonight. (Narron at a daughter’s graduation ceremony? Again?)
Milton for Kearns, I didn’t know he was fast?
ok, who the hell is that pinch running for Kearns?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Eric Milton is a good-luck charm. Comeback starts now.
Small rally here
Told ya. 6-3 and threatening for more.
Switch-hitter LLM’s first hit this season off a left-hander.
Kearns out to get some ice in his leg?
Freel to right and who’s in the pen?
K for Freel,
What happened to Kearns?
Felipe Lopez, redeem thyself. Please.
Lopez to get even here?
Misplayed a ball in the last inning for a 2 run double, might have been a cramp
Kearns made up for his miscue by getting on base; López shall now do the same to begin to make up for his two gaffes (one on the bases, one in the field).
There we go, Felipe.
Some better Lopez, ok Phillips, your turn
Classic Dusty Baker move right there. He hadn’t ordered the infield that far back, that hit doesn’t get through the infield.
OK we better have something in the 8th and 9th
strap yourself in, White is in the game
Even the pitcher can hit White, oh boy
Don’t give up a hit to the relief pitcher! Come on!
Nice turn for 2, its about time
That’s the Henry Blanco we know.
After the 1st major-league hit he collected last inning, and running the bases, the Cubs’ pitcher was supposed to come out and have his head in the clouds, throwing a bunch of batting-practice meatballs.
Didn’t work out that way.
Dunn, pinch-hitter (Ross? please?), Valentín, and Freel due up in the bottom of the ninth.
Mercker has to shut them down first.
Chicago TV reports Kearns with a strain to the Hammy, looks like Freel for a few days
Not sure I would have taken Mercker out, or put Yan in, but it should still be okay.
If Quin-Ton is standing in the on-deck circle, I’m going to be upset.
I guess your upset DA
Yep, I’m upset.
Walk to Dunn, why not Ross now?
That’s what I’m sayin’.
Ha ha! We could manage this team! Here’s Ross.
Hit for Ross!!!!
Extends hitting streak as pinch hitter, this guy is unbelievable.
Yeah! David Ross is en fuego, now 4-4 as a pinch-hitter. Tying runs are on for LLM.
We could use a “gapper” here
The boys make it interesting again
Screw the rightie/leftie match up for Ross, but works to Valentin’s advantage, don’t have to hope for 2nd hit of year (and day) from right side.
Talk about a battle.
SACKS ARE FULL!
Nice AB
But McCracken is heading to bat . . .
If I could pick a batter right now… it would be…….Tony Perez, MR RBI Red
Great at-bat for Javier. Fantastic. I just wish Freel could hit a fly ball now, with the bases loaded.
Much better use of Q, thank you very much, Bucky.
Quin-Ton is pinch-running at first. Good use.
Another full count…
Foul balls galore…
WALK!!!We are at our best when we are patient at the plate
Freel walks in a run. What an amazing job Reds hitters are doing.
Lopez is pressing here
Marty even makes it a more nerve wracking by callling the strikeout of Freel, then saying the pitch must have been fouled off. Yow.
Felipe hits .472 with the bases jacked. Insane numbers.
ANOTHER full count…amazing…
How can you take a third stike there?
OK, Phillips, its your turn
JR again , could it be?, please
Now its up to Griff. . . is there anyone you’d rather have at the plate right now?
Star-crossed. But David Ross saves it. And somehow Griffey comes to bat.
Boy, that’s tough.
I note that Marty had an interesting call of the last pitch to López. It went, “and here comes the payoff pitch — bal-called strike 3!”

DA, that’s true, but the long and short of it is that it was one that was winnable that got away…
I’m back in my room.
And I’m heartbroken. Tough loss, in a winnable game.
I’m waiting for Phillips to get even on the breaks. That guy hits everything hard! With any luck, he would have been 4 for 5 tonight with the game winner.

And to top it all off, tomorrow its Claussen vs. Zambrano, so we’ll be lucky if we can manage a 2-2 series split.
