Louisville 4, Nashville 3

33 year-old Andy Abad went 2 for 4 with 2 HR, 3 RBI.  For the season Abad is hitting .280/.362/.485.

AA

Chattanooga 6, Mississippi 5

25 year-old Gary Lee “Noochie” Varner went 2 for 5 with a R.  Voted Reds Minor League Player of the Month by the prestigious Redlegnation editors, Varner is now hitting .304/.359/.478.  In 6 minor league seasons Noochie has hit .303/.357/.432.

High A

Clearwater 3, Sarasota 2 in 11 innings

In the “This is how tough it is to make it to the majors” edition, 25 year-old John Purdom went 2 for 5 with a R.  Purdom, a 1999 graduate of Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, was named one of Ohio’s top 10 Baseball players in 1999.  Purdom, who signed wtih the Reds as an undrafted free agent in 2004, went to Indiana State where he hit .303/.401/.533 his senior year.  So far this year he is hitting .222/.283/.293 at Single A Sarasota.   Last year at Dayton he hit .222/.222/.222.  It just goes to show what an elite athlete you have to be (and a little lucky) to make it to the Big Leagues.

LOW A

Lansing 3, Dayton 1

19 year-old Jay Bruce went 2 for 4 with 2 2B.  Bruce is now hitting .280/.335/.560.  Bruce, the 1st round pick in the 2005 draft, is 1st in the MWL with 23 doubles, 3rd in the MWL in SLG, 39th in OBA, his 10 HR has him tied for 4th, he is 5th in the league with an .895 OPS.

    And man, Noochie is hot!!!! Wonder when he’ll move up to Louisville or Cincy? Oh yeah, he’s an outfielder. He might be stuck.
