Game thread: Reds at Astros — 2006.06.02

Finally, June is here!

May was a rotten month, but the Reds are five games over .500 and still in contention. Life is not bad, folks…especially when Aaron Harang is taking the mound tonight.

Should be a good one. Discuss it here.

Phillips batting leadoff and he singles!

    Alright!! BP!!

    2-0 and still nobody out.

Wandy Rodriguez was due for a big fall after his very good start. Sort of like the Reds, in that May was the cruelest month. 5.29 ERA plus several more unearned runs allowed. Looks like the Reds are healing their bats.

3-0, bases loaded walk to Kearns after being down two strikes and nothing. Bases loaded and still no out.

That was the second walk this inning to a batter who was down 0-2.

Check that: Encarnación doubles, 5-0. But LaRue stays ice-cold, pops out for out #1.

Gotta love it when your starting pitcher comes up to bat before he throws a pitch.

Rodriguez looked pretty tough against Harang.

Clemens will be making his first minor-league “getting in game shape” start with Lexington, where one of his K-progeny is playing. That’s interesting – we’ve all heard about fathers and sons playing in the majors (namely Ken Griffeys Jr. and Sr.) but this is the first time I’ve heard of it happening in the minors.

After starting the season so strongly, López has really tailed off on the stolen bases. That’s something like five of the last 6 or 7 attempts, he’s been caught.

Kearns now batting with the bases loaded, for the second time in as many innings.

This is big-time. 7-0 after a 2-RBI single by Kearns. Hope they save some runs for tomorrow.

Chris Sampson relieves Wandy. Perhaps June is the cruelest month for him.

Chris Sampson was originally a position player in the Astros system and wasn’t going anywhere, so converted to pitching. I love this kind of player. Brooks Kiesnick was the coolest.

The Astros have to hate BP!

In talking to myself about prospect pitcher conversions, I wondered about how Rick Ankiel’s doing. However, it looks like he’s still rehabbing at extended spring training after a knee injury in regular spring training. I had thought that the Cardinals passed him through waivers already (he’s out of minor-league options), but that may not be the case.

Last year in his new career as an outfielder he hit like Adam Dunn without the patience – low batting average, sub-.300 OBP, but over .500 slugging avg. in AA.

I guess this is the major-league debut for Chris Sampson.

Is that Biggio’s original batting helmet?

It’s possible – he may have inherited his dad’s or something, because it’s clearly sized for someone else. Dude looks like he’s 12 years-old up there.

    Plus – dirty, dirty, dirty.

It also looks like someone beat it like a drum for about a month. I’ve seen better looking stuff at Goodwill.

    Tech question:

How good is the frame by frame advance on a DVR? Good enough that you could analyze a hitter’s swing or a pitcher’s mechanics?

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

You don’t mess around with Lance.

Frame rate – depends on what your source is. I think normal TV is 24-30 frames/sec. and HDTV is 50-60 (interlaced). I do not know what is recorded by a DVR – I can’t believe that you can record every frame. No matter what, the individual frames probably suffer from motion-blurring, which they need to use special high-speed cameras to avoid (think of the super-slo-mo cam that Fox trots out for the playoffs sometimes).

That said, you can probably do some reasonable analysis of hitting & pitching mechanics, just as long as you don’t expect to be able to read King Bud’s signature on the baseball.

Our fearless commissioner might as well get it over with and declare himself “caesar.” At this point it’d just be a formal christening for what Selig already is for baseball.

Not overly sharp, especially after the first couple innings, but a solid quality start outing for Harang tonight. And it’ll give Belisle and/or Germano a chance to get some stress-free work in.

  • caesar is latin for emperor…

hey, i’ll take one of harang’s non-solid starts with a big offense anyday. will we see Yan?

Ah, I forgot about our acquisition Esteban Yan. Yeah, might as well toss him in.

Except, no: Chris Hammond is now being wasted in mop-up duty of an 11-2 game.

In April I would never have been able to imagine those words spoken together.

Maybe they think Hammond needs regular work to stay sharp and effective.

Yet another demo of why Weathers is no longer the closer.

  • Jimmy James

I don’t mind Weathers being used in an 11-2 game, though. Well, it was 11-2 before Weathers came in, anyway.

  • Jim McCullough

It shows some improvement in the Reds that we finally have Weathers in a role more suited for his abilities.

We still need to add a JavaMan emoticon.

I hadn’t noticed that about the smilies, daedalus. We upgraded the blogging software here at RN today, and I guess this is a by-product. We’ll have to get used to it.

  • I only have the Deadbird with the knife stuck in it. Though I think it has Xs for eyes.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

That sounds good. With some luck it could be used tonight. Going to the 10th still tied 4-4.

BTW, whatever happened to the Brewers? They certainly haven’t fulfilled the sports scribes prophecies and got bashed by Washington tonight.

  • Those Grays uniforms on the Nats sure looked good, though. Washington is hot right now. Good thing the Reds are done with them.

The Cubs beat the Cards in 14 innings. I know it was an extra-inning game and all, but Pujols struck out three times. I wonder if that’s a record for him. Voodoo Albert’s workin’…

Yeah, the Grays unis look good – they should have been named the Grays to begin with.

The Brewers had a horrible May due mostly to their pitching, which had a big letdown after a good start. Not sure what happened to Doug Davis, who is having a year as bad as last year was good. They have at least two starters injured too: Tomo Ohka and Ben Sheets are both on the shelf. Milwaukee’s team ERA was last in the NL for the month, over one full run higher than the next worst May performer.

I was semi-joking about the 3 K’s for Albert Pujols being a record, but I looked it up…it is a record high for him. Tied, anyways. He struck out three times in a game just four times previously: three games in his rookie year in 2001, and once last year. Good grief.:!:

I see we have at least one new smiley icon. And the text ‘codes’ for some of them have changed, e.g. the bug-eyes one has gone from “: shock :” to “8 O” (without the spaces).

Those with new codes are moved to the top of the order.
