Game thread: Reds at Cubs — 2006.05.30

Brandon Claussen vs. Greg Maddux. I don’t know what to make of this matchup.

I don’t want to give up on this team, because there is so much to be optimistic about. If the offense could turn it back on, the pitching has been quite good enough to make this a decent team. They just can’t put it together.

Unfortunately, it’s starting to look like the Reds are in the midst of the descent we all feared. Perhaps today is the day that they start another big winning streak.

Keep those fingers crossed, and discuss the game here. And if you’re looking to be optimistic, Red Hot Mama has ten reasons why the Reds will win tonight.

Claussen strikes out the first hitter! That’s a good omen.

Wow. Where has this Claussen been? Nice first inning, 1,2,3.

  • Jim McCullough

Claussen needs to study Maddux to see how he can get it done.

Dunn up to lead off the second inning. I hope doesn’t hit a homer. Marty will get on him about hitting a solo homer.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

So Clemens is going to stay in Houston-Town.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

It’s a double for Dunn. He would have struck out if someone were on base. I know, because Marty told me.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Yeah, Jim, I wish we could have gotten Clemens. That was always a long shot, though.

Kearns just missed tha tone. Maddux hung it a bit.

Maddux made Kearns do exactly what he wanted him to do.

Way to go, EdE! He moves all the way to third on the bad throw!

Freel pulled a Kearns on throwing that bat. How many times did Kearnie do that last year?

    A hundred.

Okay, which Claussen will we see in the second inning?

    ReplyReply

Kearns nails Ramirez at third base!

That throw was awesome. The play wasn’t even close!

  • The offense may not be working now, but it won’t continue. This offense has been among the league’s best for the past couple of years. Remember, we were supposed to worry about the pitching!

I’m thinking if we’re still in second in the next couple of weeks, Krivsky will make a BIG move. Don’t forget we don’t need to beat the unbeatable Cardinals and win the division. I’m still thinking that’s possible, but the Wild Card is more likely.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Well, if the pitching continues, things could really be good. You’re right, daedalus, the hitting is going to come around.

    Hey, everyone…

Did you know that even after starting tonight 0-2, Tony Womack is now batting .344 this season? And that includes his time with the Reds.

I wonder if Womack is this year’s Aurilia – a completely foolish signing of a player that somehow turns into something other than a drain on the team.

    Rain delay…

    Shouldn’t last too long.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

I don’t know. There seems to be a string of cells lined up coming out of the SSW. Be nice to get the extra inning in and win this thing 1-0.

    ReplyReply
  • Do you have to have an IQ of about 75 to make the calls to the banana phone during rain delays? I mean, a woman just asked if there was going to be RED in the new uniforms next year!

I see Carpenter went on the DL for the Cards. I thought the Cards had some invisible aura that kept their players from getting hurt.

Wasn’t there a nasty rumor about all-blue uniforms next year?

Though, obviously there is some red in those mock-ups…though it’s largely in the sox, which won’t show at all on most current players (especially Griffey, Dunn, López).

Anyhoo, I’ve often wondered if you have to have the 75-IQ to be a talk-radio host…the callers fit right in.

  • RagTag

Maybe they shouldn’t have sent Claussen back out. His control has disappeared after the rain delay.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

The Cardinals don’t have invincibility powers (against injuries). But what they do seem to have is a constant supply of power-ups. All the players they acquire seem to suddenly blossom after years of disappointment (Carpenter, Edmonds), or immediately enjoy career-best years (Rolen), or undergo a sudden rejuvenation of some sort (McGwire…okay, maybe not the best example).

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

We’d have had a great chance to win this game if that rain delay never occurred. Now, it’s much more difficult.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

That lead went away about as fast as it possibly could have.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

    Yuck. 4-1.

Now we have to hope that Maddux will be sent back to the mound, and that he was just as affected by the delay as Claussen.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Two-out trouble for Maddux? Good hustle by Brandon on the infield hit.

I wish just once in his career with the Reds that Claussen would take the mound for a game and leave me with the feeling “Wow! That was an amzing pitching performance!”

Are the bobblehead plastic now or are they still ceramic? Whichever, if they ever had one for a Reds pitcher it would have to have a rag arm on it.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

I still have a Mr. Red bobblehead that I got when I was a kid. The head is about 500 pieces glued together since it has fallen of a shelf about 50 times.

Valentin is behind the plate tonight. A wet baseball is tough to catch, transfer, and throw, within 1.2 seconds.

Due to the 2-year contract that LaRue signed over the winter, which calls for him to be paid $5mil next year (and an extra $450k or so if traded)), I’d expect that LaRue will be quite difficult to trade.

Aardsma replaced Hank Aaron as the first name in the Baseball Encyclopedia. For that, he deserves to be lit up.

    ReplyReply

The Yankees are likely the only ones who could care less about Larue’s contract. Of course, they have little to offer in return unless the Reds want something like single-A talent.

Castellini will have to get on his hands and knees to convince Pinella to take this job.
