AAA

Durham 8, Louisville 1

If it weren’t for Cody Ross, the Riverbats would have put up a goose egg. Ross’ went 3 for 4 with a BB, a HR, and an RBI. Since landing on the DL with a broken eyelash or something like that, Ross is hitting .444/.583/.778….Quinton McCracken, we hardly knew you!! (hopefully)

25 year-old Michael Gosling continues to get pounded. Last night he went just 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, 4 walks, and a homer. He only struck out 1.

AA

Chattanooga 4, Mobile 3

22 year-old catcher Miguel Perez, went 2-3 with a R. Perez hasn’t hit much in the minors, but he has been young at every level. Perez is now hitting .218/.292/.276.

Tyler Pelland went 5 innings walking 4, giving up just 3 hits and an earned run, but did not get the win because pitching stats are stupid. Tyler’s problem is clearly his control. He has given up nearly 5 walks per 9 innings in his minor league career. He has posted fairly respectable ERAs and Ks per inning but with that wildness he will likely struggle making it to the majors.

HIGH A

Jupiter 2, Sarasota 1
Homer “FREAKIN’” Bailey!!! threw an absolute GEM! He pitched 6 no-hit innings, he allowed just one walk and he struck out 11! He brought his ERA down to 3.35 with 44 Ks in 37 innings. He has only given up 24 hits and 10 walks for a WHIP below 1.00. Homer just turned 20 years-old last week.

LOW A

Dragons 10, Cedar Rapids 4

22-year-old Pelland is from my hometown and I’ve been following him closely since he was drafted – a Vermont-born pro baseball player is extremely rare. He has top-notch stuff but the walks & an extreme lack of efficiency are keeping him down.

With Bailey proving that it is possible for a hard thrower with control issues to take a sudden giant leap forward, I’m waiting for Pelland to have that same breakthrough. I see similarities to Scott Williamson, whom he was traded for.

  • that’s the second time he’s thrown six innings of no hit ball this year. when is his name going to be on the lookouts roster?

I had reservations after the first no-hit outing, but the second one looks like it was against a pretty good hitting team. Lots of players can have a hot month, but if he keeps it up and drops his ERA solidly below 3.00 I might promote Bailey at the half-season mark. However, the very last thing I’d want to do is move him too fast, which can easily backfire and cause setbacks e.g. Travis Chick.

I’m going to Chattanooga vs Tennessee in a few weeks. I’d love to see Bailey there by then!

  • I have no factual basis for this belief, but I think you’ll see some upward movement of Reds prospects about the time of the minor league All Star games.

I think that is a common promotion time for most organizations because it also concides with player signings from the free agent draft. Most of the draftees report to rookie league ball, but a few go right into A-ball, filling the spots vacated by those who are promoted to the next level.

I don’t think you are going to be seeing Homer Bailey rushed in any way, shape or form. Wayne Krivsky knows he has potentially something very special in Homer Bailey and he isn’t going to mess around with him. Jay Bruce might move up because he has been a men among boys so far this season.

“Quinton McCracken, we hardly knew you!! (hopefully)”

Are you saying that you hope nobody got to know McCracken, or that you hope McCracken is gone soon?
