Game thread: Cardinals at Reds — 2006.05.01

Can May be as good as April was? We’ll begin to find out tonight as the Reds try to get some revenge on the Cardinals after the Redbirds stole a series a couple of weeks ago (thanks to Pujols).

Discuss it here! There’s plenty to discuss about this team after an April to remember.

Pleasure overload? Only if the Reds and Red Sox win.

    not a bad start though.

90% boo’s, an occasional cheer. He took off his hat to tribute the crowd and it turned to about 80% boo’s.
Lots of “johnny suck’s” chants during the at-bat, and in the middle of the inning people threw money at him in center.

  • Boston Redleg

haha.. now the slow “traitor” chants have started.

That was a bomb. I’m worried that arroyo will become less effective as national league teams will get to see him more, and become more familiar with him.

    ReplyReply
  • Jim McCullough

Arroyo will have to make the rounds through the league before that happens. He might be 15-2 by that time.

  • Boston Redleg

Not nessecarily. Assuming he pitches every 5th day. In may he would face Arizona twice, and would start in the cubs series (as well as the cubs series in the begining of june) who have seen him a couple of times before. I’m just saying it’s going to be interesting how he responds to these teams getting multiple looks at him, and I wouldn’t be suprised if his effectiveness declines.

Marty is my hero. To put the rumors to bed, he just made it clear in no uncertain terms that Bronson Arroyo does not have the right to demand a trade or become a free agent after this season.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

I know we here already had that cleared up by Pinski & Chris, but nice to know the general public can now be counted as properly informed.

This game is nominally up for grabs, 1-1 in the fifth, but I just get the feeling that it’s only a matter of time before Mulder gives it up.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

good to confirm. although I would like to think that the new regime would not have made the trade if arroyo could have left after this year.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

reds certainly have had their chances, and you can only keep them smother these chances for so long.

I thought it wouldn’t be too much longer before things fell apart for Mulder. 4-1 Reds, still nobody out, and Mulder is removed in favor of recent ex-Red Josh Hancock.

Walk earned by “our savior,” bases loaded for Freel.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

haha.. Bronson really does look like somebody’s little brother who tagged along to the ballfield whenever he’s got the batting helmet going.
He’s been doing a great job of helping himself out this season.

If you want the “little brother” look you can refer to Exhibit A: David Eckstein.

Exhibit B: Craig Biggio. It looks like these guys pick batting helmets two sizes too big on purpose.

I see Boston has tied it up at 3 with NYY. I should tune in that game in the background and see what’s up.

Wily Mo with a leadoff single in the sicth at Fenway.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

yeah, boston’s doing pretty well in that game. I really can’t believe that they traded to get Mirabelli back today.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

Sox brass had a helicopter in san diego to take Mirabelli to the airport and then one waiting for him at Logan to take him to fenway. He arrived at Logan at 6:48, and was at fenway at 7:00 to start the game.
all because he’s good at catching a knuckle ball

    ReplyReply
  • why did MLB schedule all of these short series this week? players hate that.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

That’s amazing re: Mirabelli. Why couldn’t we have told them that David Ross eats knuckleballs for breakfast, and traded him?

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

Yeah. he was on pace (I know that means nothing, but it’s still a fun fact) for 77 pass balls this seaon.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Phillips is really patient all of a sudden. Works a full count.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

Who was the knuckleballer the reds had a few years ago? The sox gave up quite a bit to get Mirabelli back too.. definatly should have beefed up Ross’s resume to read, “knuckle ball catcher extrordinaire”

    ReplyReply
  • “Mirabelli disembarked from his plane at 6:48 p.m. and arrived at Fenway (courtesy of a state trooper SUV) 12 minutes later. He changed into his uniform (the familiar No. 28 he wore during his first stint in Boston) during the short drive (approximately five miles) from Logan International Airport to Fenway.”

    ha ha.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

The phrase “on pace for” is good for filling several columns by Jayson Stark. And that’s about it.

Though as a math guy, I like seeing the patterns in those insane projections – like in Chris Hammonds’ early ERA.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

That’s unbelivable. He got a HUGE ovation his first at-bat as well. Probably the best ovation a .182 hitter has ever recieved.
I’ve never made Logan to fenway in 12 minutes… came close though. 16-17 min was my personal best, but i’m pretty sure i left part of my jeep on Storrow Drive.

The Reds used to have Jared Fernandez, knuckleballer. Last I saw he was kicking around in the Houston farm system. Jason LaRue raised a commotion about having to catch him, and the Reds got rid of him.

  • has varitek ever caught wakefield?

    ReplyReply
  • only 91 pitches. unbelievable.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

Yeah, he has. He really doesn’t like it too much though, and wakefield having a personal catcher provides a built-in day off for ‘tek. So it really works out for all parties.
They gave up really quickly on Bard, although i can’t blame them. Mirabelli has been quoted as saying it took him over 2 years to get used to the knuckle ball.

    ReplyReply

Varitek has caught Wakefield on occasion. Last June 2, 2005 was one time I can find.

  • DevilsAdvocate

So Arroyo will be going for the CG, I guess. 101 pitches through eight.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Wow – that was the worst effort I’ve ever seen a shortstop make on a pop fly. Jeter could not have looked worse.

    ReplyReply
  • Boston Redleg

haha, yeah. I saw that. When Jose Contreas was being courted by both the yankees and the red sox. Theo epstein rented out every room in the hotel jose was staying in (the Westin in copley square) to keep the yankees away from him.

Not a fan of this “push the starter” stuff. Arroyo just walked a guy in the 8th – why not give an inning to White or some such?

    Dear George Grande:

The Cardinals’ first baseman is Albert POO-holes, not PULL-hols. It’s not that hard, even if you don’t speak Spanish. Sheesh.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Oh, back to Boston – Wily Mo getting another chance with the bases full…and flies out on the first pitch.

    ReplyReply
  • why is it pushing the starter? he’s only thrown 101 pitches. give him the CG, he deserves it.

I have to agree with daedalus. It’s definatly not pushing the starter, he’s been really effective, and getting it done w/o over-extending himself. Plus the kid is gumby.

I’m really liking the way this season has played out in this first month. Its not just one guy every night who’s been extremely hot, and you know he’s got to cool back down. Instead, someone new seems to rise up and contribute every night.
