Sore and sick

From the Enquirer:

Kent Mercker was available to pitch Wednesday but did not make an appearance for the sixth consecutive game.

The veteran left-hander has been experiencing some discomfort from a strained muscle in his upper back that bothered him during spring training.

“It’s nothing major,” Mercker said. “I just needed a day for it to cool off. It never fully disappeared after spring training.”

Left-hander Chris Hammond, who pitched one inning in relief Monday, missed the game with the flu.

Mercker hasn’t pitched since the 14th, not sure when it’s time to be concerned. One could argue that Hammond hasn’t “pitched” all year.
