Big game tonight against Central division rivals St. Louis. Harang versus Carpenter, so it’s going to be a tough one…but it would be nice to win this series against the Cards to set the tone for the rest of the season.
Use this thread to discuss the game. Go Reds!
UPDATE: By the way, Redleg Nation wishes a happy 65th birthday to Pete Rose!

Freel at the top of the order. Let’s hope he can get something going early.
Eckstein is the most annoying ballplayer on the planet.
Hatteberg trying to hot dog it and blows the foul pop. This is getting old.
Tony Womack annoys me quite a bit. But the point about Eckstein is well-taken.
Hey, I have an idea about filling our hole at 1B. Let’s get Albert Pujols!
Credit where credit is due. Nice play by Womack at second.
Can Pete Rose really be 65 years old?
Do you think we could trade Womack and Hatteberg for Pujols?:razz::lol:
Heck, I’d throw in Rich Aurilia, just to sweeten the pot!
I don’t want to jinx him, but Harang is looking an awful lot tonight like he pitched last year.
Chris Carpenter looks very sharp today. Hope the offense can get revved up.
i’m still waiting for carpenter’s arm to fall off.
if you’re listening to WLW – can’t you just look outside to see the weather is not nice instead of cutting in every five minutes to tell people the weather is not nice?
Freel making it happen.
That’s why Freel needs to be in the lineup! Barely hits one into right field and he motors into second with a double.
The guy makes things happen. He’s so much fun to watch.
Come on, FeLo! Let’s get a run here.
There’s only a few more minutes of this weather warning? Let it go – you (WLW) don’t have to break in every 90 seconds to reannounce it!
Edmonds has a gun, but Freel is fast when he tags up. Now it’s up to Dunn.
Freel rox!
Could Dunn get yet another sac fly? I’d rather have a HR.
Dangit.
Just tuning in… What the heck kind of lineup is this?
A strange one.
I feel odd wishing that Aurilia was in there.
Harang is rolling. Nice to see.
Yeah, that’s a little odd, Chris.
yeah, but harang can’t hit.
He can’t? hahaha….Harang gets an RBI to give the Reds the lead! :!::!:
Did they just have Valentin bunt the runner over for Womack and Harang?
i only said it so i’d be wrong!
Or did he just nub one?
nice play, Ed-E!
Casey got hurt in today’s game.
He heard Junior was hurt and got jealous!
Alright, Fel;ipe!!
The Reds are speed demons!
Let’s go, Edwin! Pound one!!
Any clue why mlb.com is referring to Felipe as
“Felipe Lopez Jr”?
I was watching that Pirates game – Casey got elbowed in a play at first. Feels like that happened before.
Can Harang give us eight innings tonight?
Can Weathers give us a 1-2-3 ninth inning?
Harang has thrown 75 pitches through five innings. I’m not sure he can go 8.
Now would be a great time for Kearns to hit a bomb.
At his present rate, it would be 120 pitches.
10 ground balls tonight.
A 1-0 win over the Cardinals would be quite a statement by the Reds.
rats.
Are we all excited that McCracken got the callup?
Quinton. Quinton. He’s our man,
Nice play, Womack.
Punch him out, Aaron.
What, daedalus??!
Playin’ some DEFENSE tonight.
chris – oh, just the leaving runners on base last inning. that is frustrating.
this is a great ballgame. *fingers crossed*
Harang through 12 pitches that inning.
Is Dunn playing CF for the Cardinals?
Womack has played a very good game tonight.
Oh, you had me scared, and my Gamecast either isn’t working tonight, or it hates my wife’s iMac. I’m moving on to Yahoo’s.
What is Womack doing sacrificing? Harang’s not going to beat the odds twice tonight.
Poopie.
Carpenter is at 104 pitches. Does he pitch another inning if he doesn’t bat this inning?
Harang is at 93 through 6.1 IP.
I’d love someone to explain that sacrifice to me.
By the way, Felipé Lopez has “Jr.” after his name because he was named after his father…ok, sory about the ‘tude, I’ve seen the Jr. on his name as far back as 2001, but most people just didn’t know of it. Felipe must have added it to his official listed name with MLB this year, so now it shows up in the gamecasts.
if i’m narron i let harang pitch the eighth. hell, the ninth, too. do we really want to put the bullpen in there?
Thanks, DA. Mostly.
Assuming the “Jr” was accurate, I could figure where it came from. I just hadn’t seen it before.
The Womack sacrifice explained: sacrifices are productive outs. They are what good players do when they play the game the right way. Even when they’re hitting eighth. In the National League. In front of one of the worst-hitting pitchers in the league. Who had already defied the odds once in the game and flared a single over the infield, and we all know that people don’t win the lottery twice in a row.
Ahhh. Molina is mad.
Now Harang is at 104 pitches through seven innings.
I agree, leave Harang in there as long as he’s pitching well. The bullpen is just going to blow it…and we’ve seen a Reds bullpen blow a bigger lead than this against the Cardinals, haven’t we?
DA’s sarcasm filter is set to “allow all” tonight.
Harang’s pretty durable, but it’s still early in the season. And there’s a big difference between 104 pitches and 120. I’d call it a (very good) day.
And watch Chris Hammond give the game away?
chad, i vaguely recall a nine run lead in the ninth inning, but that could just have been a nightmare.
Winning the lottery twice is a row is possible but not probable. If you believe in sac bunts then I don’t see a problem with it. I had more of a problem with Taguchi stealing on the first pitch without a throw over.
What is with my sarcasm tonight? It’s like I can’t turn down the dial.
Harang’s doing a fantastic job! Go Reds!
Man, for some reason even when I’m being sincere it sounds mean.
Well, that was a pretty effective 8th by Carpenter. He still looks very strong, doesn’t he?
Anyone watching the Cardinals broadcast on Extra Innings? That was a great Cardinals commercial they just ran, with all kinds of people doing their best Jim Edmonds impressions.
I’d hate to be Narron right now – do I leave a tiring Harang in, or turn it over to, say, Kent Mercker or Matt Belisle?
Well, Carpenter’s done for the night finally.
Give us one more good inning, Aaron.
What constitutes an Edmonds impression? Frosted hair and a fake tan?
I agree, DA. Tough call by Narron. He’s going with Harang for at least one other inning.
Coffey and Mercker are up in the bullpen.
Harang falling behind to Miles – making Narron’s decision for him?
Java Boy and Mercker in the pen.
Chris–
Running back like you are going after a fly ball then crashing into a wall.
Double play ball right here and now.
Leadoff walk. Not a good sign.
I’m getting worried.
Need a double play, bad.
Oh crap, here comes the bullpen. Merc`ker.
Great outing by Harang. My cap’s off to him. He pitched like an ace.
Now we get to watch the bullpen screw him out of a win.
Well, provided the bullpen shuts the door. Harang drops her ERA from 8.49 to 5.30.
This (Pujols + Edmonds + Rolen) is the situation where you bring in your best reliever (aka “the closer”). Instead, Weathers (I’m not saying he’s the best, but Narron has, by giving him that role) sits on the bench for the 9th inning against Taguchi and the other clowns. Textbook example of a statistic, not sense, dictating strategy.
please throw a DP ball, please throw a DP ball, there’s no place like home…
that’s a shame. if the bullpen blows it, harang should take them out bat and have his way with their faces.
that’s “out back”
So at this moment, I should note that the Reds pitching staff leads the National League with the fewest walks. How about that?
You Australian?
Unrelated: Check out Ronny Cedeno tonight on Web Gems. Very nifty play in the hole.
I’m sure Harang could get a few fans to watch his back while he is pounding their faces.
Sac bunt, back to the top of the order. Tying run on second, one out.
Yeah, never mind that crap I just said about Pujols. My stupid Gametracker was off again. Grrrr.
Thinking positively…Mercker is actually one of the (few) relievers that I trust.
I think the walks thing is an after effect of “pitch to contact.”
Mercker, it’s called a strike.
I’m slow on the reactions here so bear with me. “Frosted hair and a fake tan” sounds more like a Danny Graves impression to me, than a Jim Edmonds.
Chris, you need to get with the program. Get to a television with Extra Innings!
I have it. The game’s not on today. At least not here.
DON’T MENTION DANNY GRAVES WITH THE GAME THIS CLOSE AND THE BULLPEN ON THE MOUND!!!
Setting up the double play.
Really? I’m watching it here on channel 738 — DirecTV.
Here comes Coffey.
i have a bad feeling about this
DA, I didn’t say, “granny glasses, three chins, and hair up in a banana clip.”
Who do the Cards have up in the pen?
Speaking of Graves, I see he is 1-0 with an 8.41 ERA.
Narron’s been sneaking LaRussa’s medicine – another pitching change. Four more in this inning and the student will have matched the master
And why are we on the edges of our seats as if this were an October game? It’s fun, though!
Former Red at the plate…the other Encarnacion.
I’m glad we have Ed-E.
Thanks you, JUAN.
Wow. Coffey looked good on that batter.
Todd Coffey for Closer!
Come on, Mr. Jello. Punch out AP.
Womack saved a run.
Well, Womack saved a run, at least. He’s looked good in the field today.
SHUT THE DOOR NOW.
And why are we on the edges of our seats as if this were an October game?
yeah, my heart is pounding.
I wish we could put in Jeff Shaw or someone like that.
My heart is pounding, too, Daedalus and RagTag. Crazy.
Rob Dibble.
I get the feeling that Steve Stewart has an inner sabermetrician trying to come out.
Isn’t there another lefty in this pen?
Yes, Dibble. I couldn’t think of a dominating Reds closer, so Shaw had to suffice.
yeah, my heart is pounding.
1-0 away games will do that to you. Here we go…
Thank you, EDMONDS.
STRUCK HIM OUT!!!!!!!!!
Nice!
WOOOHOO:lol:
Hey, pretty good outing by Coffey. We could use someone stepping up like that.
we can breathe!!!
We’re inexperience at being on the winning end of 1-0 games.
Well, Chris Hammond is the other lefty, but for some reason I don’t think he’s the best thing to put out this fire.
What’s wrong with gas can hammonds?
How about a blast, Austin?
Was that double in almost the same spot as the other one?
Let’s bring him home.
Boo-earns!
Two run blast, Rich.
Wow. Great play by the other Encarnacion.
Maybe he should be playing CF instead of Edmonds.
Mr. Weathers, I presume?
Why take Coffey out?
Make it a 1-2-3 ninth, Dave.
Seems like it’s just changing pitchers for change’s sake.
Strike one on the first pitch to Rolen.
0-2
Hoping that the Cardinals experience some Nasty Weathers.
Three pitches, three strikes. Never mind what I was saying about Coffey.
If anyone is looking at the GameCast, what is that on Spezio’s face?
Double play ball. Make it happen.
Walked the second hitter. Never mind what I was saying about Weathers. Bring Coffey back in.
Weathers got squeezed on at least two of those pitches
DP! DP!
Spezio has a little wizzrd beard that is dyed red
YES, DP!!!!
Befvore the outcome is close to being decided — this is the kind of game that good teams win
Awesome game!
Chad with the 20/100 hindsight…
THIS ONE BELONGS TO AARON HARANG AND THE REDS!!!!!
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet:!::!::!::!::!:
cardinals feed just gave womack’s play on pujols’ ball play of the game.
Wow, what a fun game. This is the way to start a weekend series with the defending Division champs.
Standing ovation to Aaron Harang. Just a dominating performance.
The Reds pass a major test. Let’s do it again tomorrow afternoon.
Williams needs to bring his “A” game.
Reds haven’t lost a series yet. If they can win tomorrow, it’ll make four straight series against division opponents that they didn’t lose, at least.
Makes the statement that this team can be competitive in this division, at least.
That game shows what National League baseball is all about. I love the homeruns and slugging, but a game like this every once ina a while is fun.
I suspect that this comment will be met with critical analysis until the cows come home — but there was no more imporatnt play all night than Womack’s defensive play in the eighth that kept the tieing run at third.
I’m just sayin’
Neat that the Redleg Nation game threads are getting so much action this year, especially so early. I was feeling inadequate as a Reds fan when I saw an A’s blog that measured # of game-thread posts with four digits.
I agree, DevilsAdvocate. That’s something we’ve always wanted to see. Those Athletics Nation guys go crazy.
And it makes the game a little more fun to watch/listen with other passionate Reds fans, doesn’t it?
it is fun. thanks for the threads!
Oh yeah, definitely. And my sarcasm filter is working now, so that’s bonafide right there.
Womack was a major factor tonight. He shut up the critics for at least one night.
No doubt. Even I’ll hand it to Womack tonight. I didn’t see the play on Pooholes, but it must’ve been a game-saver.
Also, we can number-crunch stuff to death, but games like tonight are HUGE for the team’s psychological health and confidence – especially the bullpen. And, this is the kind of day where Harang gets a reputation as a stopper.
FAN TASTIC!
Agreed, Chris. If a game can be huge in April, this is the kind of game that deserves that description.
Way too early for me even to say this, but I’m in a giddy mood after this game, so forgive me:
This team has a bit of a 1999 Reds feel to it. Not expected to do much, but comes through in games like this.
(I said that early last year, too, though, so take it with a grain of salt.)
Yeah, they had dozen or so walk-off wins in what – 2002? 2003? That didn’t turn out well. I’m not confident in saying this is going to lead anywhere, except maybe as to Harang.
I’m not confident, either. It’s just wishful thinking. Or dreaming.
Either way, they’ve been a fun team to watch for the last two weeks.
Great win. In an offensive era 1-0 wins are the grandslams of picthing.
BTW the last 1-0 win was A LOT like last nights
