Tonight’s Minor League openers

Stayed tuned for “Down on the Farm” tomorrow, but here’s a quick look at what the Reds’ affiliates are doing on tonight’s minor league opening day. It was an ugly night, as all four teams lost.

But, hey, the Reds won!

Louisville lost to Ottawa. Justin Germano and Ryan Wagner were ineffective.

Phil Dumatrait pitched six innings of one-hit ball for Chattanooga, which is nice to see. Unfortunately, Jacksonville won 2-0 on a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth by Brad Cresse.

Homer Bailey made the start for Sarasota, and was somewhat effective in a 7-3 loss for the Reds. He gave up two earned runs in 4.2 innings on the mound.

In Dayton, Travis Wood got roughed up and Dayton took it on the chin from South Bend.

  • Link to the Sarasota Box score.

In Dayton, Jay Bruce had 2 hits, including a double and stole a base (also caught once). He’s batting 3rd in the lineup, which kind of surprises me. I thought they might hit him lower to keep the pressure off him, at least early in the season.

Do you know the expected rotations at each of the minor league levels and if any of the AAA/AA guys have a chance to make the jump to the majors this year?

The Louisville paper has an article on the Bats opening day pitching staff.

Rotation is Germano, Gosling, Ramirez, Hall, and Michalak. Michalak is holding a spot warm for Bong who is expected to return in mid-April. They make a point in the article that all 5 are 25 or under. Gosling, Bong and Hall are 25. Germano and Ramirez are 23.

  • Article on Wood’s performance:

First, the good. Wood worked his way through the first two innings with relative ease, retiring six of the first seven he faced. He struck out three during that stretch, getting ahead in the count against four of the seven.

Secondly, the bad. He ran into trouble in the third and fourth innings, falling behind in the count, struggling with his control, particularly during his final inning of work.

As for the mediocre, that would constitute his final overall line. Wood scattered six hits while striking out five and walking one. He allowed three runs, all earned, on 78 pitches, discovering quickly that it will take a bit more effort to dominate the way he did last season in the rookie leagues. A
