Baseball innovations

Jayson Stark has this interesting list of the top 25 baseball innovations of the last quarter-century. It’s worth a read.

It’s interesting. I think he short-changes some of the developments on the field, such as the decline of the stolen base, the final demise of the 4-man rotation, and the rise of the bullpen specialist.

I think he wildly overstates the impact of expansion (yes, it’s had an impact, but it hasn’t changed the nature of the game), the split-fingered fastball (is that still a big deal? ), and he splits “more media coverage” into about 8 different items.

It’s a very interesting topic, though. What’s changed the most since you attended games in 1981? (Besides the fact that the Reds were good then).
