I'd try Hudson as a setup guy the rest of the year with the intent of trying him out as closer in 2006.

I wouldn't bring Wilson back as a starter next year either. He'd come back into the bullpen.

Neither of these guys have ever pitched a full season in the rotation...their arms have NEVER handled it.

Talk to the Dodgers about acquiring Odalis Perez.

Call all 29 teams asking about their interest in Eric Milton.

Find one other legitimate top of the rotation starter. Make Harang, Claussen, Milton (if untradeable) your 3-4-5 guys.

There's no one in AAA that can help...especially not the level of help that the Reds need. No more #4/5 starters, please. We need an ace!

It's too bad something couldn't have been worked out for Sergio Mitre. He's been inconsistent for the Cubs but has a live arm and one of the most extreme "ground ball" profiles in MLB. A perfect fit for GABP and a possible project for Ruhle. He's going nowhere with the Cubs.

As hard as it has been to watch the Reds this year, I don't think they are that far away from being a contender. Its probably no more than 3-4 competent pitchers. Two reliable starters and two reliable relief pitchers and this team would be competitive.
I don't forsee Wilson ever recovering to be the #3 starter he should have been. He never really was talented enough to be a #1. I think Milton's done in Cincy. I think the Reds will eat a good bit of his salary and trade him back to the American League in the off season.

One real deal ace for this team and the starting pitching become good (not great but good). Vern Ruhle has done a very good job at helping this staff improve their game.

You hit it on the head with Pena. If he learns to lay off the pitches that he is not capable of hitting (like that low breaking ball) and improves in OBP, he becomes a leathal weapon.
